Exercise and Smoking Cessation: Integrating research into practice (2004-2005)

Participation in physical activity is a healthy alternative to smoking that may aid cessation efforts and abstinence among smokers. There is no consensus or indication as to how to translate the aforementioned research into practice. For example, there is no advice in the USDHHS (2000) Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence on how exercise should be incorporated into smoking cessation attempts. Specific questions confronting policy and funding decision makers, and practitioners may include

This project will systematically review the evidence and address gaps in the existing research, develop case studies of successful practice and incorporate the input of international and national experts, and practitioners in identifying clinical practice guidelines for the consideration of exercise in cessation attempts while developing an agenda for future research needs in this area. We will also consider how our findings can be translated into practice nationally through the development of exercise and smoking cessation 'toolkits' and web-based support material.
