Severe mental illness and Type 2 Diabetes (2004-2006)

This project aims to develop a method for researching the health behaviours of individuals with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar depression who are at risk for type developing type 2 diabetes. The project will be in three phases. Phase 1 is a non-randomised, prospective, observational study that will produce descriptive statistics for the study population and inform the method for later intervention. The objectives of the study are to develop a research method that will:

  1. assess the physical (in)activity of persons with severe mental illness over 12 months;
  2. ascertain links with other health related behaviours and how they unfold over time;
  3. identify their associations with psychosocial factors and psychopharmacological factors;
  4. explore the susceptibility of these individuals to obesity and obesity related diseases
