Gene: Rogue EA medical doctor
Born Eugene (Gene) Bartok in 2226 (see player's B-day)
-Mother; June Webster
-Father; Ebert "Bad Ass" Bartok
-Sister; Jessica, Born 2219

   Born 2226, on Mars Colony.  Second child to Bert “Bad Ass” Bartok, and his wife, June.  Elder sister is Jessie (don't ever call her Jessica, unless you intend to go to the infirmary), was born seven years earlier.  Since Bert was a carrier marine, this was an Earth Force base & hospital.  Bert already had made Sergeant, and mom was a surgery nurse.  Father already had his disciple in his sister Jessie, and his tough love only furthered the alienation of Eugene, brining him closer to his mother.  With so much affection for the mother and his better role model, it is no wonder Eugene would eventually follow her into the medical profession.

-Childhood
   Most of Gene's childhood was spent travelling around from EA base to EA base.  He became a precocious little bookworm.  He found solitude in the books he read and excelling at school tended to piss off his father more, so it only fuelled him on.  He did pick up an early skill, that would prove invaluable, and that was his little indulgence of sneaking off, when nobody was looking, only to hide in the shadows and watch his sister play with the other kids.  Her athleticism was so great that she could usually better boys older than herself.  In some ways he looked up to her for this, although he would never tell her, but it also reinforced his lack of participation, as it is very embarrassing to be bettered by your sister, never mind the huge age gap at the time, and worse, other kids may expect him to be as just as good. They would become very disappointed when they found out he was nothing like her in the field of physical activities.  Eugene was small and thin, unlike his hearty, athletic and robust sister.  She was outgoing, and attractive, while he was extremely shy, and while attractive as well, he never felt confident and would often sidle away from encounters with people, but it was especially hard for him in dealing with girls.  Needless to say, this made him a very late bloomer.  At this area of his life, though, he did pick up a lot of academic skills, a love of history and a fascination with alien species.  He also developed his hiding and sneaking skills.
{FRAGILE, CURIOUS; Hiding (shadowing, sneaking), Biology (Human), Mathematics (Trig), Investigation (Research)}

-Young Adult
   As a young adult, he graduated early from his secondary education to be one of the youngest teens ever admitted to the Mars University, paying for it with bursaries and scholarships.  He studied Medicine, after his mother, and had a side hobby of studying all he could on aliens, their cultures and their biological make-up.  This was a start, and human education systems didn't have much information, but what little bits of bio-alien info Eugene could find, he would drink in like a drunk falling off the wagon.  During his scholastic years he furthered his academic skills with drive and determination, resulting in his graduating in the top 10% of his class.

   Since blooming, Gene, his new nickname, found that although he didn't fill out like his father and sister, his more delicate frame of his mothers had a lot of agility and manual dexterity.  This was a definite asset in the fields of medicine and surgery, but also made him a natural at most parlour games:  His Stronger, faster mind, and superior agility made him somewhat of a shark.  Despite this form of success, he still never became adept at social skills, especially with regards to the opposite sex and again he found far more comfort in his books and studies. Another notable turning point was a History Professor who took a great liking to Gene, and shared many of his unpopular views on the universe, including a philosophy that aliens were individuals, worthy of our respect and deserving of as much rights as we thought humans did.  After one particular night where Gene bested someone at a pub, and got beaten up by the sore loser who wouldn't pay, the professor started to teach Gene an old earth fighting style, very much suited to his more slender, but highly dextrous frame, Ninjitsu.  Messages to home (wherever that may have been) were regular, only because of the tight bond he held with his mother.  His father almost never came to the vid-phone, and his sister was too busy off playing soldier to even bother to call.  When his sister made fighter pilot, and their father went for the promotion and graduation ceremony from flight school. However, they were too far away (because of where his father was stationed) for them to attend his upcoming graduation from medical school.  He could tell from their call that day that his mother was beaming over with pride and happiness, while his father was at best, indifferent, (but he felt it was his duty to at least be on the call).  Gene felt that If it wasn't for his father and his stupid military career, his mom would have been there.

   It was after exams but before convocation that Gene received the fateful news:  In the war with the newly encountered Minbari race, a raid upon the forward base his parents were stationed on was attacked, this was the year 2246.  There were a few survivors, but his parents were amongst the ones listed as KIA.  Missing his graduation ceremonies, he took leave to attend his parent's final needs and warp up their affairs. He wound up having to do most of the work, as his sister was needed in the war effort, and in her own words, “Dad would have wanted me to stay out here and do what he would have done in my place.”  Almost 2 months later, Gene returned to school to pursue further studies the next semester and finish his post doctorate.  The Battle of the line came and went, while he was still in school, and although his sister is one of the few listed as a fighter pilot who survived the encounter that day, Gene never really cared about any of it.  If it weren't for his father and his stupidly selfish career, his mother would never have been on that station and would be alive today.  EF and his father killed his mother, not some alien species.  Hell, they showed their mercy that very day by not obliterating the Earth (BOTL), yet his father, and Earth, in their arrogance started the war and got a lot of people needlessly killed, including his mother. That belief and realization sparked a rebellious streak and would defend aliens whenever any one would speak derogatorily of them.  In this stage of his life Gene developed the traits of stubborn, ambidexterity, and a large asset (insurance and inheritance).

   During school, Gene only had one friend, Garth Anderson.  Garth was the kind of guy who was always looking for a scam that would make him some money.  Garth was also the kind of guy who couldn't go to sleep at the end of the day, unless he was one “up” on the rest of the world.  Gene would always stand by his flawed friend, and a few times even defended him, on deals gone bad, with his developing skills of ninjitsu.  When Gene came into his money, Garth, who had become an investment dealer after graduating with a CMA, took care of the money for him.  Despite Garth’s major flaw, he took the greatest care of Gene’s money, and actually managed to increase it into a sizeable amount; you see, Garth grew up a little over time and realized he had only one true friend who loved him, in spite of his flaws, and developed a loyalty to Gene that would be tested greatly later in their lives.

Skill and traits added: {Stubborn, Ambidextrous, Assets; Medical (Biotech, Diagnostics, EMT, Pharmaceutical, Surgery – all human), Gambling (Parlour Games), Martial Arts (Ninjitsu*), Writing (Scientific Reports/Journals)}

- Adulthood
   At the start of his adult life, Gene graduated and could only find employment, ironically enough) in Earth Force.  Although Gene hated the military, it did allow him to be stationed on a distant base amongst the non-aligned worlds, and gave him the opportunity to interact with a multitude of alien races. Though his job was at the Base Hospital, he snuck off to do part time work at an "underground" clinic, getting his first taste of working with aliens, and actually learning how to diagnose and treat them.  This would have suited Gene just fine as a career for the rest of his life until he was brought in and reprimanded for his unauthorized work in the clinic.  He was forced to attend only in the most infrequent basis at the clinic, and had to be extra sneaky to get them their much needed supplies.  He may have been caught at this eventually, but he wasn't doing it for long before fate intervened:  A freighter had suffered an internal explosion and the few surviving crew were brought into the infirmary.  The crew were Minbari.  Three of them had survivable injuries and could afford to wait for their government to send a pick up ship, but one was in critical shape.  Gene was actually brought in, as he had the most experience on aliens.  Gene had almost no knowledge of Minbari, but in EF’s ignorance they felt that aliens are aliens and he would be the one to operate.  Just before the operation, a politico called in and told them not to go ahead, as a Minbari dying by Human hands could be far worse than just letting him die.  Gene ignored this order and went ahead with the surgery.  In the middle of the surgery, Gene made a mistake and the Minbari's condition took a turn for the worse.  In fact, for a second or two, the Minbari died there on the operating table, but some quick thinking and re-evaluation allowed Gene to save the day.  The hospital administrator (Fredrick Smythe III, a very politically minded sort of chap) and the CO of the EF garrison (Colonel George U. Grant) didn't see it that way.  They saw an alien-loving traitor in their midst, and one who almost started another Earth-Minbari War.  His actions had pissed them off for the last time.  Gene was charged with attempted murder, sedition, treason, and theft (thought they forgot about those medical supplies, didn't you!).  The trial was held there on base and was over very quickly.  The real twist here is that in transit to a military prison facility, they stopped on a remote planet, claiming ship malfunctions forcing them to land to affect repairs.  The marines brought out the prisoner, and uncuffed him.  The CO then told him he was a shame on the memory of his father, and that they were going to report him as escaping.  “If you love those filthy aliens so much, then you'd best live amongst ‘em for the rest of your life, ‘cause if you ever show your face on an earth post again, you are either going to be shot or jailed, or both.  Either way, The Human Race wont ever have to deal with your kind for as long as you live, as escapees of capital crimes are either given life, or the firing squad. So long traitor, and enjoy your new life, if you live long enough!”

   At the beginning of the trial, Gene was able to get a quick message off to Garth and Garth did what any good friend would do. Buried the money in shell accounts in his name and erased any connections to Gene.  Then Garth waited patiently for further word and any help he could give.  That contact didn’t happen for a long time, but Garth still waited.  Eventually though, the call for help did come and was one of the greatest days in Garth’s life, as his only true friend was still alive, and he could finally start repaying a debt he felt was long overdue.  Garth set up ways for Gene to access his money that keep him alive all these years on the lam.  In fact Garth worked even harder to increase Gene’s money, so it would never be a concern for him.  Fortunately Gene had always lived a Spartan lifestyle, one of the few things his father had taught him.  Gene lived for years working amongst the aliens in the Non-aligned worlds.  Seems when he was left to die, he found a remote Drazi outpost, and his name had become known as a human who helped the alien races.  They soon helped him off that remote planet and he was employed by many different species amongst the League of Non Aligned Worlds.  Gene learned quickly, becoming an expert on many of the major races within the LoNAW over the next two years.  With borders up against the Narn colonies, Gene soon developed skills in treating their racial, and learning much about their culture as well.

   Surprisingly, it was this notoriety that got the attention of the Centauri Republic. Specifically a noble house with a branch of the family running a giant farming colony on the fringe of Centauri space. Seems they needed medical staff to take care of their Narn servants, and of course no Centauri would dirty their hands with such a job; and to hire a Narn to do this was unthinkable, so why not hire this human?  It seemed the perfect solution.  He was employed for a one-year contract.

   During the one year, Gene became quite adept at the medical treatments of both the Narn and the Centauri. During this time, three notable things happened to him during this period; he unknowingly saved the life of a Narn who was a member of one of the outer circles of the Kha'Ri.  He didn't find this out until much later, when an ancient ceremonial Katak was mysteriously delivered as a thank you.  He has never known the true identity of his patient, but keeps this sword as a symbol of what he stands for.

   The second event was a small private duel with a young brash Centauri who thought he could pick on the poor doctor by fabricating an imaginary offence that needed to be avenged.  The duel was only set to first blood, as killing this valuable employee/slave would not go over well.  Fortunately for the youth it was a spur of the moment thing brought on by too much alcohol.  The youth demanded years of servitude when he won the duel as the price for the imaginary offence (free work from a talented alien would look like a good deal when he told his father of his shrewdness).  No price was asked of Gene, as the youth was too sure of himself. Gene, having continued his martial arts  training, was prepared for the worst but planned to meet this challenge head on. Without any fanfare, the duel was over quickly, and with a small cut on the hand of the Centauri and his sword across the floor of the room.  The young noble stood in shock and amazement.  Gene, very humbly, merely said, “You didn't ask my price for winning.”  Now a very pale expression came upon the young lad, as Gene could call for something as severe as he had asked and that would bring great shame upon his family's house.  Gene merely walked over to the fallen sword, a ceremonial Coutari of excellent craftsmanship, and said impishly, “I think this will do nicely… if you could spare to part with it.”  The young Centauri jumped at the opening to get out of this horrific situation, “Yes, sure.  No Problem, keep it with my blessing.”  Fortunately for Gene, this lad had suddenly grown more wisdom than ego and took a liking to the unassuming human doctor. Farn Mollari befriended Gene during the rest of his stay, partially because the human intrigued him, but mostly because he wanted to learn a few of the good doctor's moves with the sword.

   The third occurrence happened partly because of the respect Gene had earned in this Centauri House, and because of basic Centauri nature:  A Centauri Ambassador innocently thought he would pay a compliment to the Human Race at a trade negotiation, and mention the good service the human doctor had performed over the past year to one of the Centauri Houses.  That news was mentally recorded and investigated by Earth Gov. Needless to say they now demanded the return of the wanted fugitive.  Since the Centauri love intrigue and a good game, they immediately acquiesced to the demand, but had secretly sent off word to get Gene out of there.  Upon arriving to the Centauri Colony world, the Earth Force found him long gone, and all the Centauri could do is hold up their hands and say, “Oh well, I guess we missed him…” The Centauri found this whole drama quite humorous, and it gave them much fodder for amusement for many many months after.

   This incident however, brought the good doctor’s abilities and reputation to the attention of many people, especially to the resident Chief Medical Officer of the newly operational Babylon 5 space station. Dr. Ben Kyle, and his eventual replacement, Dr. Stephen Franklin, both made inquiries via the telepath underground to meet Gene. The meeting, set up by a Drazi smuggler on behalf of Gene, was an unqualified success , and began a close professional relationship. Particularly with Ben first, but then the focus shifts to Stephen when does come out to Bab 5, all for the simple fact that it's easier to avoid Earth Force on Bab5 than it is on Earth.  the trio share research and publish medical papers; though both Ben and Stephen get most of the credit for now, both are also working, albeit subtly to, clear Gene's name and reputation.

  Gene has a small set of quarters on Bab 5, and comes to visit fairly often.  He spends most of his time writing reports for the Station’s CMO, on the various alien races and imparting the knowledge he has acquired over the years.  He has very good forged documents that allow him to move freely about, but being casual with this could get his picture to the wrong people who would recognize him and start the manhunt all over again.

Skills and traits {Dedicated (Hippocratic Oath for all Sentients), Enemy (Earth Gov), Allies (CMO at Bab5 & Garth Anderson on Mars Colony); Medical (Diagnostic, EMT, Surgery – Centauri, Narn, League Worlds), Acumen (veracity), History (Centauri, Narn, League Worlds), Savvy (Centauri High Culture, League World Space Culture), Combat (Handguns), Slight of Hand (Pickpocket, Concealment).

Special Notes:
Acumen developed in his fugitive stage, as he had to learn who he could trust and who he couldn't to stay alive and free.  History and Savvy for the same reasons and they help with the Acumen skill.  Only handguns, as that is easily concealed and he has no use for big destructive weapons, only a handgun for self-defense.  Sleight of hand is to move about things, palm passes, etc.

*Ninjitsu – new martial art – requires a weapon, not a hand-to-hand skill, but the weapon may range from shurikens to throw, to a sword, to a simple knife or stick.  Well suited to the life he is following as it was designed for the Japanese peasant, who was forbidden classical forms of weaponry, and had to improvise with what was on hand.  Very similar to Gene’s situation.
