Jared is age 34 as of  Dec 24, 2256.

-Childhood
   Jared was born in 2222 on Earth, in Austin Texas, and was immediately placed in foster care.  He never got to meet his original parents, nor knew anything of his original family.  He never spent any significant length of time with his foster caregivers, the system regularly moving him around, shunting him from neighborhood home to private home to hostel, to welfare camps and so on.  As a result, he never knew any kind of stability and did not develop a deep sense of trust for people. He was basically a problem child, would run away from his homes at any given moment, and it would take days to track him down; he began to get very adept at <HIDING> from the truant officers and other authorities.

- Adolescence
   As he approached adolescence, his troubles began deepening.  He would occasionally suffer mental flashes, as if from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, but the impressions (images, half-heard sounds, feelings, emotions, deja vu) could never be identified and he could never be persuaded or coaxed to talk about them <STUBBORNNESS>.  A medical examination revealed an imbalance in blood chemistry, for which he was prescribed medication.

   Relationships were likewise distant and reserved.  Other youths in the occasional work camp or neighborhood school project would pick fights with the brooding sullen kid.  He of course had to learn to defend himself <UNARMED COMBAT> or run away.  He began to learn how to predict when trouble was brewing just by reading body language or other small signs <ACUMEN>, and was usually correct about it.  His only real retreat from the world was in his drawings <ART>, which he became very proficient at, taking the few Art courses available at the schools.  He specialized in drawings (sketching, charcoal, pen & ink, etc.) but would never put them out for show, and of course would never take part in any sporting activities at school, for fear of being bullied by the bigger kids <PARANOIA>.

   He never bothered getting to know any of his sets of foster parents, or the temporary “brothers and sisters” he was grouped with.  Either he would run away, or his medication would be held up (as part of their disciplining), resulting in even more erratic behaviour.  His mental flashes became stronger and more disturbing as he grew older, driving him to block out anyone who tried to reach him.  His turmoil began expressing itself in his drawings, which he had to take greater care to hide from prying eyes and ears.  Finally however, he was brought into the care of Harrison and Ursula Carter, who worked together at a local newspaper as writer/reporter and Executive News Editor.  Instead of the usual impatient and invasive handling of the troubled youth, they gave him his space and privacy, and just went about their own work, which was always exposing the political impact of various public figures on the people and community.

   Jared finally began to grow close to them, even taking an interest in how their work had the potential to change things for the better.  Harrison began teaching the boy how to write better, which eventually instilled an interest in Jared enrolling in college.

   However, even with greater understanding did not come easier tidings.  His mental flashes became more bizarre as he grew older, if not more frequent or severe.  Having moved out to attend college and university in Miami and Cape Canaveral, the new settings made it even more difficult for him to fit in.  He did not develop close friendships as the years went on, though his sometime companions grew more numerous, even if only for the purpose of making black-market business contacts <ALLIES> to score more and rarer pharmaceutical substances.  His studies, though never falling to the failing level, were never what they could have been had he been able to concentrate on them.  Rather, he turned to various drugs and alcoholic combinations <ADDICTION> to escape the anguish caused by the mental flashouts.  He lost count of the number of friends and girlfriends he managed to get hooked in the midst of his own quest for release.

   He continued his artistic development as an expression of escape.  His drawings became a method of secretly illustrating the hidden dangers and pitfalls awaiting everyone.  The rest of his off-time was spent at the Miami planetarium and the Cape Canaveral Observatory, watching the stars and how humanity was reaching them.  Eventually he accumulated enough credits <CIVIL ENGINEERING, PHYSICS> to graduate with a major in History and Political Science, as he had continued to gain interest in the political scene shown to him <HISTORY, SAVVY> by Harrison and Ursula, who would still keep in close touch with him.

   One night, the summer of his graduation from university in 2244, Jared was abducted from his home by the military arm of Psi-Corps.  Though he fought like hell, enough to put a couple of them in the hospital <UNARMED COMBAT which he had continously pursued over the years>, he was taken to a secret underground complex.  There he was then subjected to a Deep Brain Scan, and with no explanations or questioning, all the memories of all the flashbacks he had ever experienced were all brought back out and re-lived in all their confusing detail.  Even the impressions that he did not remember at all were suddenly brought into sharp focus, and all the confusion, pain, hatred and murderous feelings all surfaced again. 

   Details appeared though; the unconscious suggestions of deja vu that he had felt over the years suddenly took on real identitites, locations, and times.  The unconscious suggestions of other-ness suddenly became truly real, as if seen through the eyes of another person in another place.  Jared saw other people being slaughtered at his hands, explosions happening at the end of his sighting scope, moneys exchanged out of his wallet, buildings burning at his plasma cannons.  Finally, still with no other explanations or questions, he was left alone, having been mentally tortured, wondering if he was leading a double life cut off from his other Jekyll/Hyde self.  His captors kept him fed and sedated over the next few days, but refused to speak in his presence.  Ever more desperate, Jared tried all openings to escape, but remained a captive.

   Then, it was like there was an explosion in his head.  Despite the medications, despite the attempts to keep him sedated and blanked, Jared was suddenly transported in awareness.  He could suddenly feel his Other, seeing clearly through the Other’s eyes, hearing through the Other’s ears, screaming through his Other’s mouth, knowing through his Other’s mind he was about to be murdered...

 ...and the rest was blackness.

   When he came to days later, he learned that it was the Psi Corps that had taken him in.  They explained that he had been under observation for some time, because it was suspected that he had been experiencing some mental connection to an individual in California, a well-known terrorist.  Mykel ben Costa was one of the top ten Most Wanted for various terrorist activities, with ties and connections to three major Earth-political Terror coalitions.  When it became known that he would have struck next at the Earth Alliance President at the new United World Centre in Geneva, at the eve of the launch of the Minbari Expedition, Jared had been taken in for a scan to determine the exact location of the terrorist cell as seen through the eyes of ben Costa, as experienced vicariously through Leeson.

   At the moment of ben Costa’s death, Psi Corps had observed a full awakening of Jared’s own psionic abilities.  As a reward for his service to the people of Earth, Jared was to be recruited into the Corps.  He was trained in all areas of the Corps <DRIVING, COMBAT RANGED, TELEPATHY>, cleaned of (mostly) all his previous pharmaceutical addictions, given further education to complete a teaching certificate <INSTRUCTION> in his academic specialty, Earth Astro-Political History and given a job within the colony worlds recruiting program.  Over the next few years, Jared was relocated to an office on the Earth Moonbase, from which he could travel to various academic centres on Earth and the colonies, to conduct guest lecture tours (but only as a front to seek out new psi enrollments at each different collegiate centre).  He got to be good at it, able to determine almost at a glance any wild undeveloped psi talent in any prospect.  In 2248 just prior to the Battle of the Line, he was among the delegation at Tau Ceti IV trying to establish a new Earth Colony as a retreat to assist in the imminent evacuation of Earth refugees from the final Minbari offensive as he was familiar with many outposts.

   Returning to the Earth Moonbase, Leeson lived a withdrawn, haunted life.  He lived alone, letting almost nobody into his apartment, much less into his life.  His leisure time was spent with various casual buddies and their bimbo friends, running pointless Virtual reality combats and getting quietly, politely drunk every night.  Inside, the experience with the erstwhile terrorist group EarthNow! was still coming back to haunt him.  And coupled with the near massacre of all humanity at the hands of the Minbari, he was left shaken, disturbed, and distrustful of all.

   He began investigating back into the files of Mykel ben Costa and the EarthNow! group, which were for the most part on the restricted file lists (Jared had been given top level clearence towards end of the war and it had never been revoked), and it was then that he made the unsettling discovery that ben Costa was a dead-lookalike for Leeson.  Jared also learned, looking through the interrogation tape files, of several of the recognition code phrases used between the terrorist cells, and made another discovery:  there had been a few occasions where, walking along in some places on Earth, some individual would seem to recognize him and speak to him, though of course Jared had no personal memory of the person.  Now he knew that these individuals had been using the old contact codes with him.

   The next time Jared was visiting the Presidio on Earth, again he was approached by a woman who introduced herself using one of the recorded recognition codes.  To see where the encounter would lead to, Jared responded with the standard response learned from the tape -- and suddenly he awoke to the fact he knew the woman!  She was an old lover of his!  Or at least, of his ben Costa's.  Immediately he felt again all of ben Costa’s emotions for the girl, and immediately feared for her life.  But how were these people recognizing him, Jared, as one of their own, even as a trusted leader?  Shaneen, the woman, told him that there had been rumours over the past couple of years that their leader, assassinated twelve years ago at the hands of the EarthForce militia with the aid of PsiCorps, had been seen alive again.  And ben Costa was indeed a mirror image of Leeson himself, which was how he was being mistaken over and over again for the dead terrorist.

   Instead of turning her in, Jared let Shaneen go, and returned to the PsiCorps library where he began looking into all files relating to EarthNow!, Mykel ben Costa and himself.  Enlisting Harrison Carter’s help with the old archive files of EarthNow! and its development, Leeson kept finding links in the PsiCorps files between the terrorist’s personal file and his own.  Finally he hacked through Ultra-violet code barrier that was holding back the link:  ben Costa was Leeson’s brother, a birth twin also separated from the parents and natural family.  A little luckier at hiding than Jared, Mykel had fully disappeared as a youth, resurfacing in secret as an activist with every radical political, or religious organized cult that could gain an identity.

   PsiCorps knew about the blood relationship between Mykel and Jared, and had kept the troubled lad under surveillance ever since Mykel had vanished.   Not only had they had never told Leeson about the other man’s identity or even the reason for his wild psychic flashouts, they also had arranged the entire family split as part of an experiment in blood-twin psychic relationships.  When it turned out Mykel was getting too hot to handle, and was about to jeopardize the new Earth-Minbari expedition with an attempted assassination of the Earth Alliance President, they had to haul in Jared for a deep brain scan to determine ben Costa’s true location, track him down, and destroy him.

   The very next day after that discovery, Jared Leeson applied for an extended expense account for a "recruitment drive," secured a credit line of $10K, packed his gun and his daybag, and disappeared the hell outta Earth space!  Through his contact with Shaneen <ALLY>, he was able to arrange transport from the Moonbase, hopefully to make for the outer territories, Babylon 5 and his freedom... In early November of 2256, he finally made it to Bab5 via the underground telepath railroad. He was introduced to the party via Matron and Dr Ben Kyle.
