Nathan Camillo Sidoli

A Brief Biography

I was born in New London, CT, to two young hippies. My folks split up when I was too young to have any memory of them ever having lived together. My mother and my stepfather moved to CA when I was four. I was raised in and around Sebastopol CA, just north of San Francisco, but I visited my father in CT every summer. When I was 18, I moved to Santa Fe, NM, to attend St. John's College. A year after I received my B.A., I moved to Toronto, ON, to study the history of science at the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Toronto. I moved back to the States for a couple of years after my M.A. and worked at various places including the Education Program for Gifted Youth at Stanford University. I, then, returned to Toronto to take a Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of science under the supervision of Alexander Jones (now at New York University, in the Institude for the Study of the Ancient World). I specialized in the history of the exact sciences in Greco-Roman antiquity. During this time, I also worked for Gila Hanna at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and at the Fields Institute for Researches in Mathematical Science. After I received my degree, I spent two years in Vancouver, BC, as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in Science and Technology Studies working on mathematical sciences in Arabic sources with Prof. Len Berggren in the Mathematics Department at Simon Fraser University, and teaching history of science in the History Department. When my grant was up, I moved to Japan and lived for a year and a half in Osaka, Japan, under a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, working with Prof. Ken Saito on Greek mathematical sciences and with Prof. Takanori Kusuba on Arabic mathematical sciences. I am currently on the faculty of the School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, where I teach history and philosophy of science and science and technology studies.
