Selia Karsten: HI Darlene
Alfredo Chow: Hi everyone!
Darlene R. Lane: Hello everyone
Selia Karsten: Hi Elana
Michael Neundorf has joined the chat.
Selia Karsten: Hi MIchael
Michael Neundorf: Hi
Michael Neundorf: I hope everyone is well
Alfredo Chow: Greetings!
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Hi Selia, Michael, Darlene and Alfredo
Darlene R. Lane: Alfredo, Thanks for the first class community sites...
I enjoyed "surfing" through the information available at each location
Darlene R. Lane: Hi Michael!
Alfredo Chow: I'm still waiting for Stephanie
Michael Neundorf: Hey Darlene
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Almost too much info in those communities...lots
to read
Alfredo Chow: I would like to act
Alfredo Chow: as moderator if you don't mind
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Y
Alfredo Chow: To keep the conversation smooth and free
Darlene R. Lane: you da' man Alfredo
Alfredo Chow: Keep your lines to two sentences
Michael Neundorf: Thanks Alfredo
Alfredo Chow: sites
Alfredo Chow: We will begin talking about the FC sites once I see Stephanie
Alfredo Chow: Everyone had a chance to register to FC?
Michael Neundorf: Yes
Darlene R. Lane: Yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Y
Alfredo Chow: This is about our topic online communities
Alfredo Chow: Stephanie is still not there?
Michael Neundorf: I haven't looked around too much yet.
Alfredo Chow: Think about your impressions and be prepared to talk
about it
Elana-Debra Shapiro: I registered for most of the FC sites/communities.
Michael Neundorf: OK
Alfredo Chow: As always you are welcome to positive criticism, negative
comments are not good for brainstorming
Stephanie Moschonissios has joined the chat.
Alfredo Chow: Welcome Stephanie
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Welcome
Michael Neundorf: Hi Stephanie
Selia Karsten: Hi Stephanie
Darlene R. Lane: Hello Stephanie
Alfredo Chow: Let's begin our chat
Stephanie Moschonissios: Thank you and hello to everyone.
Alfredo Chow: Any comments or feedback about the FC sites, two lines
per person, please
Stephanie Moschonissios: I had difficulty with the revelation one.
Darlene R. Lane: I liked manicthunder best... I like the visual appeal
and the way it was organized. I found it easy to navigate around
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Some had a little too much content
Selia Karsten: I had to register twice for revelation but the correspondence
was speedy and polite
Elana-Debra Shapiro: But the format was great
Michael Neundorf: There was much info to digest
Alfredo Chow: How is it useful for our project? ideas?
Stephanie Moschonissios: Are you thinking of using it as a conference
area for us to post information?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: The idea of setting an online community for your
classroom, as a resource and common study area seems appealing
Alfredo Chow: We will post our research in the Metal view in WebKF
Michael Neundorf: Classroom or whole school?
Darlene R. Lane: I agree with E-D... I think there is a lot of potential
in the online community classroom idea
Alfredo Chow: classroom?
Selia Karsten: Are there any "holistic" implications?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Classroom, for a start...whole school is too big
a bite to swallow
Alfredo Chow: We need to develop our theme for this project
Alfredo Chow: I agree EDebra
Darlene R. Lane: Originally, we were discussing the "paperless" school
idea wern't we?
Michael Neundorf: Yes
Alfredo Chow: Yes
Michael Neundorf: Classroom idea is more manageable
Selia Karsten: What if everyone isn't good at using computers?
Alfredo Chow: Stephanie, is there something you can relate to your
ideas?
Michael Neundorf: or has limited access
Alfredo Chow: It should be a class with previous keyboarding experience
Stephanie Moschonissios: Sure, if we do a classroom than we can set
up potential conference folders, i.e. math
Alfredo Chow: Yes, stepahnie
Alfredo Chow: sorry for the spelling
Stephanie Moschonissios: students and teachers can post material there,
similar to what we do in this class
Alfredo Chow: yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: exactly!
Elana-Debra Shapiro: chat for interactive learning, both student to
student and student to teacher
Stephanie Moschonissios: so we can use it as a communication forum
for students, teachers, and parents
Alfredo Chow: Somethink like what UT Schools is doing
Elana-Debra Shapiro: bbs / email for posting research, projects, homework
Stephanie Moschonissios: do we want to include parents in this?
Alfredo Chow: Instead of using IRC Chat
Selia Karsten: Ho difficult is it to create one of these FC classrooms?
What is inolved?
Darlene R. Lane: Yes, I think it's important to include the parents
Alfredo Chow: It's very easy, Selia
Michael Neundorf: go on
Alfredo Chow: I can do it in Manic Thunder
Elana-Debra Shapiro: perhaps we can limit parental access so students
dont feel watched
Darlene R. Lane: good point
Alfredo Chow: Simply select File -> New Conference
Stephanie Moschonissios: or maybe just post a newsletter forum for
parents
Elana-Debra Shapiro: but allow them access to posted final work, and
access to the teacher directly (parents sub-conference)
Alfredo Chow: Yes
Stephanie Moschonissios: great
Alfredo Chow: They can use Private Chat to establish interaction with
teacher and parents who can't come to school because of work
Stephanie Moschonissios: now where do we go from here..
Alfredo Chow: Draft a proposal
Darlene R. Lane: Eventually, would it be possible to have a "stand
alone" FC conference area or would a project like this always have to be
acessed through an existing FC location?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: I guess we have to decide on the specifics of
our model, and then build a visual model, then build the conference itself.
Darlene R. Lane: i.e., "Manic Thunder"
Alfredo Chow: Yes, we have to do research on these sites
Alfredo Chow: which would allow us to participate in a conference like
Manic Thunder
Michael Neundorf: how much work is it to maintain such a site?
Alfredo Chow: Is anyone registered in Manic Thunder?
Darlene R. Lane: I am
Stephanie Moschonissios: I am
Alfredo Chow: Minimal work is required
Michael Neundorf: Yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Just registered tonight
Selia Karsten: I am
Alfredo Chow: I will set up a conference in Manic Thunder for further
investigation
Alfredo Chow: I will call it Metal View
Alfredo Chow: Do you agree with this process?
Stephanie Moschonissios: Yes...Should we come up with a mock profile
for our school?
Michael Neundorf: hands on learning
Darlene R. Lane: Sounds good so far...what do you mean by "investigation"?
Alfredo Chow: You will have the same permissions like anyone in the
group
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Then we add content to metal view?
Alfredo Chow: BUt be very careful aboout deleting items
Alfredo Chow: Yes
Alfredo Chow: But be very cautious about removing things on the conference
Stephanie Moschonissios: What kind of content?
Alfredo Chow: Because you have the POWER
Elana-Debra Shapiro: lol
Alfredo Chow: You will have the power to modify items in the conference
Alfredo Chow: Selia, what do you think?
Alfredo Chow: We will report our progess to the Metal view in WebKF
Selia Karsten: About what, Alfredo - you've covered a number or items
in this chat so far
Alfredo Chow: As a matter of fact I will go into Manic Thunder to create
a conferencwe, are we on the right track, or should I do something different?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: why not here, and not Manic thunder...what's the
difference?
Selia Karsten: I think the team needs to come up with their objective
- a mission statemment or some summary of what they hope to accomplish
- then an action plan - checklist of what they want to do about it
Alfredo Chow: I can do a conference on OISENet if you like this way
Selia Karsten: If joinoing and building on Mani THunder is on the list
- great! What else is? and who will do what?
Stephanie Moschonissios: Are we going with OISENet or manic thunder?
Alfredo Chow: I can make the conference on Manic Thunder or on OISENet
and let my team members design the forum
Darlene R. Lane: We need to decide what type of classroom this service
will be designed to cater to...
Alfredo Chow: What is your preference?
Alfredo Chow: OISENet or Manic Thunder?
Alfredo Chow: Please let me know
Stephanie Moschonissios: I am not sure...
Alfredo Chow: Darlene? Michael, Elana? Stephanie?
Michael Neundorf: are thre disadvantages to either?
Darlene R. Lane: I found Manic Thunder more visually appealing, but
if it easier for others in the course to access our work by using OISENet,
then perhaps that's the avenue we should take
Alfredo Chow: Give me a minute, please
Elana-Debra Shapiro: proposed Mission Statement: To develop an
online community that represents a classroom, including various subjects,
homework area, bbs corespondence between class members, and a posting area
for finished work.
Alfredo Chow: Sounds good
Elana-Debra Shapiro: thoughts, criticisms?
Michael Neundorf: nice...junior class
Stephanie Moschonissios: sounds great
Darlene R. Lane: Sounds good.. do we want to commit to a specific grade
level? Is that necessary to include in the MS
Alfredo Chow: Do you have a conference on your desktop called Metal
Project now?
Darlene R. Lane: Yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Yes
Selia Karsten: Yes indeedy
Alfredo Chow: This will be our online community for this project
Elana-Debra Shapiro: please refine the mission statement as you see
fit
Selia Karsten: What grades do members of Metal team teach?
Darlene R. Lane: Is there a resource available that will assist us
with the "how to's" of posting content in our conference (besides Alfredo....:
)
Darlene R. Lane: I teach secondary
Stephanie Moschonissios: I have taught from k-10
Elana-Debra Shapiro: SK
Alfredo Chow: The FirstClass Help
Michael Neundorf: i have taught elem and sec
Alfredo Chow: I teach "Adults"
Elana-Debra Shapiro: lol
Selia Karsten: I am wondering about creating this for students who
will never get to use it...
Alfredo Chow: Michael do you have a conference in your desktop?
Stephanie Moschonissios: what grade should we focus on? Should
we focus on middle school and one subject only...
Michael Neundorf: I see it now
Darlene R. Lane: Do any of us have a class that might be available
to pilot such a project???
Alfredo Chow: Lets make concensus on the grade level and subject
Selia Karsten: Can students ever use the OISENet conference - would
it be more accessible if it were on ManicThunder?
Alfredo Chow: It would be more accessible through Manic Thunder for
students
Selia Karsten: I thought only OISE students could use OISe conferences
Michael Neundorf: I could talk to a couple of teachers
Elana-Debra Shapiro: So lets go with manic Thunder, as more accessible
to all
Alfredo Chow: OISENEt requires registration of a student at the institution
Michael Neundorf: OK
Stephanie Moschonissios: I agree.
Selia Karsten: Then you can actually invite students of the age group
you choose
Selia Karsten: to "test" the idea
Darlene R. Lane: I have a grade9 girls Phys Ed class that starts in
February... we can "use them" if we'd like, but remember our computer access
at school is limited to about 8X a semester as a class...but on Monday
I can inquire about home acess
Alfredo Chow: Good idea
Stephanie Moschonissios: I am on leave right now and do not have a
class to support this project.
Stephanie Moschonissios: Darlene that sounds really promising
Alfredo Chow: It is accessible via the web if they don't have FC client
Michael Neundorf: I know a keen gr 5 group
Elana-Debra Shapiro: web-access is a must, as not all have FC Client
Selia Karsten: If you do have a goup like the phys ed group -
you will need permission from their parents depending on t heir age and
you would also want to create content that would appeal to them
Alfredo Chow: Could I have your permission to set up a conference on
Manic Thunder on your behalf?
Selia Karsten: Can you get permission re the gr 5 group, Micahel?
Michael Neundorf: I think so
Darlene R. Lane: Are there any other candidates? or are we deciding
between the grade 5's and the Grade 9's.
Selia Karsten: COuldn't you have conferences for both?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Im ok with the Manic Thunder conference
Alfredo Chow: And Please post a message in the conference so that I
know you can use it.
Michael Neundorf: OK
Stephanie Moschonissios: Thanks Alfredo.
Selia Karsten: In Manic Thunder you are going to create a Metal COnference?
Alfredo Chow: Do you agree with this?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Y
Darlene R. Lane: Yes
Stephanie Moschonissios: Sure
Alfredo Chow: Yes, Selia, is that ok in Manic Thunder?
Michael Neundorf: Yes
Selia Karsten: SOUnds good - you're on the right track it seems to
me
Michael Neundorf: and thereis a light at the end of the tunnel
Stephanie Moschonissios: I like the phys. ed. group because it is just
starting.
Michael Neundorf: could be motivating for them
Alfredo Chow: I might speak with adminsitrator of Swiftnet to allow
me to use a conference in case there is problems with Manic Thunder.
He knows I'm a graduate U of T student
Darlene R. Lane: I think that we're better to start with focussing
on one age group as opposed to both, as the conference will differ according
to target audience...
Alfredo Chow: Do you have an account with Swiftnet?
Darlene R. Lane: Yes
Stephanie Moschonissios: Yes
Michael Neundorf: yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: i registered today
Alfredo Chow: We need back up plans just in case, that's my style
Michael Neundorf: I agree with Darlene about 1 age group
Stephanie Moschonissios: I think that one subject is probably a better
idea for us to tackle.
Alfredo Chow: one subject is better
Michael Neundorf: which one?
Stephanie Moschonissios: I think the gr. 9 girl's group can really
benefit from this. What do you all think?
Alfredo Chow: Do we have consent from the parents?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: I think we need to get the permission and buy-in
of the test group before we put effort into content.
Alfredo Chow: Can get permission from the parents?
Selia Karsten: SOmeone can draft a eprmission letter to send, eh?
Darlene R. Lane: I havn't met the group yet, our first class is on
Monday..... I could put together a permission form that describes the project
Stephanie Moschonissios: Good idea Elana.
Stephanie Moschonissios: Michael do you want to do the same?
Michael Neundorf: I will help with the letter
Alfredo Chow: We need an concensus
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Will the content be for Grade 9 Girls Phys Ed?
(if we get permissions)
Darlene R. Lane: Keep in mind that the PE class is all girls, so that
may have to factor into our plans aswell, with regards to making the sale
Stephanie Moschonissios: I can with the letter if you want...
Stephanie Moschonissios: oops, I meant help with the letter.
Michael Neundorf: Go with the 9s first?
Alfredo Chow: Please post the letter in the Metal view in WebKF
Darlene R. Lane: That would be great..It would be nice to have something
to send home on Feb 4th...
Michael Neundorf: you mean something else...
Alfredo Chow: ?
Darlene R. Lane: something being the permission form.....So we have
our mission statement...what type of activities are going to take place
in this conference
Alfredo Chow: Elana , are you there?
Alfredo Chow: Please wait everyone to respond
Elana-Debra Shapiro: What's your curriculum for Grade 9 girls Phys
Ed?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Im here...just thinking and reading along, Alfredo.
Darlene R. Lane: Subjects that the 9's take include...math, science,
english, 1 art credit, 1 Phys Ed credit, 1 tech credit, 1 french credit,
1 geography credit
Alfredo Chow: Darlene? Stephanie?
Stephanie Moschonissios: I think this is going to be really exciting.
What if we deal with some 'real' issues that these girls may have, i.e.
self-image, nutrition...
Michael Neundorf: are they doing any research projects?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: We should focus on the Phys Ed stuff, and definitly
the issues that Stephanie mentioned!
Selia Karsten: What about something to do with the Olympics?
Darlene R. Lane: In PE, the health focus is on Substance use and abuse,
Healthy Sexuality, and CPR.. the activity units include both individual
and team sports,
Stephanie Moschonissios: What will you be doing first?
Alfredo Chow: I will go along with the majority
Darlene R. Lane: Olympics start soon (yipee)... we'd have to get a
jump on it to capitalize on this event
Michael Neundorf: focus on Canadian athletes?
Selia Karsten: The girls might want to follow a certain sport or role
model
Darlene R. Lane: I'm starting withFitness, Aerobics, Weight Training
and Team building initiatives ( 3 weeks)
Stephanie Moschonissios: Darlene, what do you think these girls would
really like and benefit from?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Aerobics & CPR seem to fit well, both deal
with the heart, and it's Valentine's day soon!
Alfredo Chow: What are their interests?
Michael Neundorf: boys
Alfredo Chow: lol
Elana-Debra Shapiro: lol
Darlene R. Lane: I'm trying to think about what would motivate these
girls to visit this online community..... I definitely think that issues
relative to them are important to include (even if they are outside of
the curriculum).. body image, etc.
Stephanie Moschonissios: Good point!
Alfredo Chow: Tom Cruise?
Stephanie Moschonissios: What if they could create their own online
magazine?
Michael Neundorf: advice
Alfredo Chow: E-magazine
Stephanie Moschonissios: Something simple, and they could post and
edit their articles.
Selia Karsten: I know a site where you can choose a body and see what
different clothes look like on it
Alfredo Chow: Gap?
Stephanie Moschonissios: That's cool... Selia where is it?
Darlene R. Lane: Girls love to talk.... so if we could generate some
relevant discussion around some of these issues, that would be good...
keep in mind, these kids will not have the same annonimity (sp) that others
involved in online communities
Selia Karsten: Land's End
Selia Karsten: You create the model on your own measurements - my female
students love it
Elana-Debra Shapiro: So what is our homework? Perhaps we should
each design, in high level, a basic layout of the conference. That
way we can cram all our thoughts together and make one GREAT community.
Michael Neundorf: surf for ideas
Alfredo Chow: Why don't we post our thoughts in the metal view in WebKF?
Darlene R. Lane: I could definitely do something around the online
magazine idea..., my first official health unit with them is not until
April, I'm in activity units until then
Stephanie Moschonissios: I agree with Elana. Let's do our homework.
Alfredo Chow: My time is up, let's schedule the next meeting
Darlene R. Lane: Sounds good...I'll get the permission form ready for
monday and post it in the Metal View WK on the weekend for feedback
Alfredo Chow: Are you free on Superbowl sunday?
Stephanie Moschonissios: Darlene, due to that issue of anonymity, it
might be good for us to post articles that they could read and relate to.
Darlene R. Lane: NOPE
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Are we agreed? Develop a basic layout of
the site, and then surf for cool things!
Alfredo Chow: Sure, Elana
Michael Neundorf: yes
Darlene R. Lane: Sounds good E-D
Stephanie Moschonissios: yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: My husband has got me to watch the Stupid Bowl,
how about next week, same time
Alfredo Chow: Next Tue at 7:30 pm?
Elana-Debra Shapiro: I mean, Super bowl
Selia Karsten: Thanks for inviting me Alfred o - looking good team
Stephanie Moschonissios: Sure..Darlene how can I help with the letter?
Alfredo Chow: Tue 7:30 pm?
Selia Karsten: Any questions before I go?
Darlene R. Lane: I'm ok with next week Tuesday...I'll met the kids
by then, so I'll give you an update as to their reactions..although I'd
to have a clearer idea as to what this site will be like before "selling"
it to them
Alfredo Chow: No yet, Thanks Selia
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Next Tues, 7:30 it is.
Selia Karsten: Bye then all
Stephanie Moschonissios: I don't have any questions right now. Next
Tues. is good for me too.
Selia Karsten has left the chat.
Michael Neundorf: Great
Darlene R. Lane: Perhaps I could preview some of the ideas we've discussed
and then send to form out with our "concrete plans" after our meeting
on tuesday
Elana-Debra Shapiro: nobody liked my "Stupid Bowl" joke?
Alfredo Chow: smiles
Michael Neundorf: put your money on the Rams ED
Stephanie Moschonissios: I thought it was funny
Alfredo Chow: Tue at 7:30 pm
Alfredo Chow: yes or No
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Y
Darlene R. Lane: Yes
Michael Neundorf: yes
Stephanie Moschonissios: Yes
Elana-Debra Shapiro: bye all, good luck!
Alfredo Chow: meeting is adjourned
Darlene R. Lane: Adios
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Alferedo, will you post the minutes?
Michael Neundorf: take care
Stephanie Moschonissios: Bye
Alfredo Chow: I will Elana
Elana-Debra Shapiro: Bye
Michael Neundorf: thanks
Elana-Debra Shapiro has left the chat.
Stephanie Moschonissios has left the chat.
Darlene R. Lane has left the chat.
Michael Neundorf has left the chat.
