model 4

Jules Prown, 'Mind in matter: an introduction to material culture theory and method' (1982).

Prown’s relatively straight forward but multi-stepped model allows for a rich analysis of an object.

1. Description (internal evidence based on observations of the object)

j substantial analysis: physical dimensions, material, articulation

j content: iconography, overt representations, decorative designs and motifs

j formal analysis: visual character, form, configuration, colour, texture

2. Deduction (relationship between the object and the perceiver)

j sensory engagement

j intellectual engagement

j emotional response

3. Speculation (the mind of the perceiver)

j theories and hypotheses

j program of research
