Prown’s relatively straight forward but multi-stepped model allows for a rich analysis of an object.
1. Description (internal evidence based on observations of the object)
j substantial analysis: physical dimensions, material, articulation
j content: iconography, overt representations, decorative designs and motifs
j formal analysis: visual character, form, configuration, colour, texture
2. Deduction (relationship between the object and the perceiver)
j sensory engagement
j intellectual engagement
j emotional response
3. Speculation (the mind of the perceiver)
j theories and hypotheses
j program of research
