[NOTES on archdeacons: Nicholas
ardn Huntingdon probably held land of Abbot Aldwin of Ramsey (11); the
archidiaconate "was not an office designed for popularity" (13); a preacher
in 1190 "could find no more effective parable to demonstrate the mutability
of human fortunes than to declare to his congregation that even popes and
archdeacons died" (14)
Henry of Huntingdon spoke
well of monks and seemed to be on good terms with local monasteries, unlike
later archdeacons like Walter Map. Henry held the manor and church of Stukeley
in farm from Ramsey Abbey, and passed it to his own son Master Adam, and
he to his son Master Aristotle, the latter who held the farm for 100 solidi
(15); Aristotleís son Nicholas, though, was forced to relinquish his firmaria
back to the abbey in exchange for 30 marks of silver]

by 1163 at the latest. One wonders whom Mr. Peters was speaking to when
he introduced his study of the archdeaconry of St. Albans, saying "The
functions of an archdeacon are well-known and need little discussion."
