Lee attempts to provide a complete overview of the evolution of classical ballet from its earliest beginnings to the present while contextualizing shifts and innovations within the social, cultural and political events of the day. Intended for students of the history of dance, she provides a concise sketch of the evolution of ballet. At times prescriptive (ex. “From time immemorial people have danced in response to an instinctual need for emotional expression.” p. 1), Lee uses her extensive experience as a dancer, choreographer and professor (Florida State University) to explore the history of ballet. This work will be useful as a springboard for further research connecting the shifts in ballet technique, costume and footwear, and greater historical perspectives.
