The reviews editor for the Dance Research Journal and Associate Professor at Temple University, Meglin examines the ballet Le Révolte des Femmes (1833) in the context of the feminism of the Saint-Simonians. She argues that the ballet’s focus on the liberation of women from tyranny was not so much a political and social statement about the place of women in contemporary society than a means by which to tantalize and amuse the audience. While not of direct relevance to my exploration of pointe shoes, Meglin raises some interesting issues regarding audience expectations of gender, class and ballet that will no doubt provide interesting insight into my topic. |
