Ummagumma
A SPECIAL NOTE, ABOUT THIS SPECIAL ALBUM:
Nick Mason is right - the sound of this album is "incredibly antiquated" compared to today's standards and for this reason I have avoided tackling it for years. Anomalies abound - mixing errors, background noises, generally poor recording quality. I think this may be due to a lack of attention to production on the part of the band, but also an unfortunate deterioration in tape fidelity over time.
Apparently, the 1994 CD reissue was mastered from a "safety" copy, since the original had become unusable. Subsequently, more hiss and drop-outs have snuck in than usual for a Pink Floyd record, though they might not be present in earlier vinyl pressings. Keep this in mind as you browse these anomalies.
The liner notes state that the live album was mostly recorded at Mother's, a Birmingham club, in June 1969. But actually, the date was April 27th. The central portion of "A Saucerful of Secrets" was recorded at their next gig, May 2nd at the Manchester College of Commerce and edited into the rest of the Birmingham show.
