8-10 page paper with bibliography.

 

1. How do African Diasporic communities create a sense of communal identity through music and dance?  Focus your research on one community.

 

2. Examine one genre of African music that is influenced by the African Diaspora. 

 

For question 1 & 2, you may either conduct your research and analyses based on recordings, video (if available), and scholarly books and articles OR carry out an ethnographic project by researching, participating, interviewing, and observing a musical practice from anywhere in the African Diaspora (including Toronto).

 

3. Another project subject to Prof. Cain’s approval.

 

The submitted assignment includes:

1. The paper itself in hard copy, with bibliography

2. Electronic submission of the paper through turnitin.com. 

Due Thursday 31 March, 2005 at the beginning of class (unless announced in class)

Electronic versions must be time-stamped by turnitin.com no later than Thursday 31 March, 2005; the assignment will otherwise be considered late. (see syllabus for late policy)

 

The term paper is to be typewritten using the following criteria:

            Double spaced

            Times New Roman 12 pt. or Courier 10pt.

            1” margins

All citations and style issues refer to The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition or The MLA Handbook.
