PART-TIME STUDENTS RE-ELECT

CHRIS RAMSAROOP

FOR GOVERNING COUNCIL
VOTE ONLINE MARCH 10-14th

WHAT I'VE DONE:
  • As part of the OSAP reform committee demanded and won university support for Part–time student eligibility for OSAP!

  • Fought and won student housing on Campus!

  • Helped win Academic bridging and TYP students the right to vote and run for GC!

  • ALWAYS voted against tuition increases and fought against FEES!

  • Put forward an action plan to fight against systemic racism at the university!
IMPORTANT TO NOTE BEFORE YOU VOTE!
(Why vote for BOTH Chris Ramsaroop AND Jeffery Peters?)

If re-elected I will continue representing all part-time undergraduate students at U of T’s Governing Council by speaking out on critical issues such as:
.
PART-TIME STUDENT HOUSING:
  • All part-time U of T students should be included under the housing guarantee

  • U of T must take a more systemic approach to housing in city - the administration should develop a lobbying strategy to demand the availability of more affordable housing.
.
PART-TIME STUDENT FUNDING:
  • Part-time students must be guaranteed under U of T financial guarantee. APUS research has reveled that part-time students contribute 12% of the university's tuition revenue but only receive 4% of the total grant-based financial aid. I have met personally with the UT President Robert Birgeneau and Provost Shirley Neuman and other student governors to discuss how UofT must immediately address this inequity.

  • Currently U of T owes part-time students $4 million in financial aid. We want it back!

  • As one of the student Governors on the 2002-03 U of T coalition for OSAP Reform (reps from the UT admin, UT grads from GSU, full-time undergrads from SAC, and part-time undergrads from APUS, I worked with APUS on a student survey for feedback on what part-time students felt was problematic about OSAP.

I was successful in having the group include within their proposals: That all part-time students be eligible for OSAP!
.
EQUITY MANDATE:
  • Demanding U of T adopt a strong equity mandate

  • Implementation of a Human Rights Code

  • Ensuring that faculty is representative of student body

  • Ensure students of all communities are able to participate in university & get an education
.
REFORM GOVERNANCE:
  • The voices of students need to be heard not silenced!

  • Students make up 87% of the university population. Eight student governors out of 50 is not democratic!

  • Before 2002-03, Academic Bridging Program students and Transitional Year Program students WERE NOT ALLOWED TO RUN OR VOTE in Governing Council Elections!

I challenged this at the Elections Committee and have even appealed GC's Draconian rules to the Provincial courts! The UofT finally recognized the fundamental democratic right of students and changed their election rules this year.
