Research Interests
Periodic
structures, lens antennas, transmission-line metamaterials and their
application to antenna and microwave component design
Biography
Colan Ryan received his
B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from
the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada in
2006 and his M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from
the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Canada in
2008. He is current working towards his Ph.D. degree at
the University of Toronto.
In 2005, he
held co-op positions at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner
of Canada and later in the Systems Engineering group at Edgewater
Computer Systems, Inc. in Ottawa. In 2006, he worked
at Carleton University as an NSERC Undergraduate Student
Researcher in the Department of Electronics. There, he developed a
MEMS-based reconfigurable PIFA antenna for handheld wireless devices and has
been jointly awarded a US patent on the design. After
completing his M.A.Sc. thesis on
wideband transmitarrays in collaboration with the Communication
Research Centre in Ottawa, he joined the Electromagnetics Group at the University of Toronto in
2009 under the supervision of Dr. George Eleftheriades; his research
interests include antenna design and transmission‑line metamaterials.
In his
spare time, Colan practices both Krav Maga and Taekwondo; he also has a keen
interest in medieval European history and 20th century history and
thinks it would be great to live in a museum one day.
