Peter Coppin is researching ways to use graphic illustrations as simple interfaces to otherwise complex ideas. The purpose of this research is to understand the psychological processes that enable the success [or lack of success] of an illustration, and then use that understanding to create effective illustrations.

Previously Coppin was the Director of Carnegie Mellon's Remote Experience and Learning Lab, home of the EventScope Project. Coppin created techniques and technologies to enable the public to "remotely experience" far away places without physically being there through the use of remote sensing devices, such as a robot, and interfaces such as a computer.
