Small Bowel Studies
SMALL BOWEL ENEMA

Contrast:
  • 500 mls of 50% w/v Polibar

  • 1.25 liter of 0.25% Methylcellulose (mix 250 methylcellulose with 1 liter of water)

Equipment:

  • 8F Enteriflex 43 in” long tube (water flushed through tube)

  • Crazy Glue to seal the second opening of the tube (done by radiologist)

  • Also tape the second opening prior to usage (use water proof tape)

  • 8F Frederick Miller feeding 120cm long tube (Cook )

  • 2 Bags attached to two tubes with barium and methylcellulose

  • Infusion pump

SMALL BOWEL FOLLOW THROUGH (SBFT)

  • If only SBFT:
    • 2 cups of Ultra R - mix with water up to the brim of cup (33% w/v)

  • If combined with UGI:
    • 1 Cup of Ultra R - mix barium with water up to brim of cup (33% w/v)

  • May mix with 10ccs of Gastrografin (ask radiologist first)

  • Contrast:
    • ENTEROVUE
    • 13% w/v barium mixed with methylcellulose
    • The density of the contrast is too ‘light’ and therefore some barium needs to be added (see below)

Instructions for Small Bowel Follow Through (Enterovue):

  • Small Bowel Follow Through ONLY:
    • CUPS OF ENTEROVUE
    • Mix with 30 ccs of POLIBAR 100% w/v

  • SBFT with UGI as an initial exam:
    • After UGI done give patient some water (to dilute the EZHD barium)
    • Wait 5 minutes before patient drinks the Enterovue barium
    • DO NOT ADD ANY BARIUM
    • Give 1 cup of Enterovue barium

Important Radiographic Technique Instructions:

  • Do not use photo- timing for CR films
  • Use kV 85-90
  • mAs 10 (approximate)
  • Please annotate the radiographic technique on the film
