Small Bowel Follow Through (Conventional)
  • All SBFT exams are done either following an UGI or de novo.

  • The barium used is Ultra R diluted to 30-45% w/v. You can add 10-15 cc of Gastrografin to shorten the transit time. You can also use liquid Entero Vu.

  • Films are taken every 15 minutes, with each film checked by a radiologist and abnormal areas are radiographed.

  • There should be a minimum of TWO 14x17 radiographs taken on every patient, even if barium has reached the colon at 15 minutes.

  • Spot films, with and without compression of the terminal ileum and pelvic small bowel loops (if filled with too much barium) are taken.

  • All areas of barium filled small bowel should be palpated and abnormal areas radiographed.

CHECK ALL FILMS BEFORE THE PATIENT IS DISCHARGED.
