Case Fifty-Five

Case Summary

Diagnosis:  Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Clinical hints:

This is commonly seen in young men. Treatment often requires tube or catheter "drainage" of the pneumothorax. If under tension, rapid relief required.

Radiological Pearls:
  • classic "visceral pleural" sign

  • air around collapsed lung

  • collapsed lung denser than usual

  • mediastinal shift, if under tension

Films were kindly provided by Dr. W. J. Weiser.
