Case Summary

Diagnosis:  Traumatic Aortic Tear


Clinical hints:

Blunt trauma, such as that due to a steering wheel is usual.  Associated rib fractures common. Chest x-ray often shows only mediastinal widening. These patients need further investigation.


Radiological Pearls:
  • mediastinal widening (bleeding)
     
  • may be obscuration of aortic arch
     
  •  may be deviation of NG tube
     
  • need CT and/or angiography
