Generally
speaking, my research interests are centred around an examination
of human responses to the challenges imposed by climate change
and
the general pursuit of sustainability. What defines a project or
process as sustainable is a complex question in each instance that it
is examined, hence the opportunities for research are nearly limitless.
I'm interested in life cycle assessment approaches in their
various forms, and the quantificaiton of human impacts on the
environment. Efforts to mitigate climate change in the
developed
world, and to adopt low-carbon approaches to growth in the developing
world will likely have reprecusions that reach far into the future,
hence need to be examined carefully. Specifically, the
"metabolic
flows" that enable our urban systems (energy, materials, water and
nutrients) to function require further assessment to examine whether
these are being provided efficiently, through low-carbon processes and
with consideration of the best use or disposal of waste from these
streamsx.
My previous research has focused on a variety
of sustainability-related topics, including the development of a
soy-based edible rigid packaging tray (as a replacement for polystyrene
produce trays), carbon fluxes in cities and sceneario development for
low-carbon technology adoption. My future research interests
include further exploration (in both developed world and
developing world contexts) of low-carbon technology adoption
dynamics, sustainable food systems, the relationship of
engineering and public policy and the mitigation of impacts of the
