Felicity Ni

PhD Student, University of Toronto

I am a PhD student at the University of Toronto studying Environmental Science with Professor George Arhonditsis and Dr. Satyendra Bhavsar from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. My project involves studying the effects of mercury dynamics in freshwater ecosystems on health, linking concepts of biogeochemical processes and contaminant fate with human and animal health.

I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2013, receiving an Honours Bachelor of Science and specializing in ecology and minoring in environmental ethics and bioethics. My undergraduate degree and previous research experience have provided me with a background in pollination ecology and freshwater ecology. In November 2014, I received my Master's degree in Environmental Science. During my master's degree, I conducted a research project with Professor George Arhonditsis and Dr. Gurbir Perhar where we studied the application of metabolomics and predator-prey dynamics in early-warning detection systems for freshwater ecosystems. In addition, we devloped a model of the trophic interactions in the Kowie River of South Africa. I have completed a wide range of courses to further my environment-related skills and knowledge and to complement my research interests. I intend to focus on data analysis and ecological modelling which can be applied broadly in many different systems.

In my spare time, I enjoy knitting, baking, drawing (with paper and Photoshop), and playing music (piano and I'm learning the ukulele). I tend to avoid social networking, although I occasionally do find myself on Instagram or LinkedIn. I also enjoy writing HTML pages (as seen here) and learning computer code; I am currently taking up R.
