Research:

Hello, I am happy to announce that starting Fall 2012 I will be on tenure-track at the Catholic University of America, School of Architecture and Planning. I am grateful for the many years of contract teaching at the University of Toronto and the wonderful students, faculty, colleagues and world-class research that takes place there.

My research examines the challenge of planning to mtigate urban sprawl in the context of regional infrastructure; including land use, transportation, habitat conservation (biodiversity), waste management, water/wastewater and public health. The pubic health crisis I am now examining is the obesity epidemic - planning must play a major role in mitigating inceasing BMI through smart growth, transit-oriented-development, and transportation demand management. The fast/processed-food industry must be stopped from their destructive agenda and urban planners must tackle in this mandate.

In my research and professional planning practice recurring themes have included the need to reduce our ecological & carbon footprints and to promote environmental justice, social/gender equity and dispute resolution approaches to planning. There is also a need for more integrated and holistic approach to international development that combines environmental, infrastructure, poverty, health and gender issues. Other areas of long-standing interest include the application of GIS technologies, ecological footprint anlaysis and life cycle assessment in environmental planning. The main field sites for my research include Ontario"s Golden Horseshoe, Washington DC, central Minnesota and SE Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos - see   Waste-econ)
