Internet has become the most preferable communication tool in 21st century. People do not write a letter to their friends anymore. They now prefer using e-mail rather than hand written letter. E-mail works because network process calls internet exists. People can just google any information to find more information and it actually works! Going library and search for information without using internet is now wasting time. In internet, people can download everything, and downloading files from internet is not strange thing anymore. It is too powerful tool which can violates others’ intellectual property.

     “The Napster has closed in 2001 even though its users were more than 38 million” (Dusan). They closed due to RIAA’s lawsuit and court order. RIAA sued Napster, because it allowed people to share music files, and they believed it resulted dramatic decrease in Recording Industry’s profit. However, can it be said that decreasing in CD sales is just because of Napster and its users? There are laws regulated but Recording Industry’s profit had not returned to 90’s profit. CD’s paradigm was changing due to development of new sound format, MP3. Moreover, development of MP3 player also boosted recording industry’s failing.

     The main reason of recording industry’s failure was that they only denied reality and blamed everything to P2P problem rather than compromising with reality. What if they made a company which control MP3 files to be downloaded? What if they tried to make P2P users to their customer rather than just avoiding them? There were many answers that RIAA could follow. There is a website call ‘Cyworld’ which is similar to ‘Facebook’. Users can buy music to set up music on their blogs. However, even if they buy the music, they can only use them in their blogs. Not in other web sites, or MP3 player. The person who likes ‘let it be’ has to buy same song again and again to listen to same song. There are so many things need to be changed and regulated.

     However, people’s morality also needs to be changed for better society. Many of music downloaders blame that they download music because they do not want to buy all songs. They also blame the price of CD is too expensive to afford. Despite the facts, stealing is not right in capitalistic society. If they want something from others’ work or idea, they have to pay for it even if it is expensive. Of course, reducing price of contents and allowing internet users to download them with payment will surely increase customers. However, wrong is wrong and we need to reflect on ourselves.

     Current regulations and laws have a blind point. It is that uploaders get punished and downloaders do not get punished by law. It is true that if there are no uploaders, than there will be no downloaders. However, the law must be stricter that they also need to punish downloaders as they are also part of damagers of intellectual property. Also, following other nation’s successful method would be a good idea. Nations with higher internet speed tend to have more intellectual damages occur through P2P programs. Countries such as Korea and Japan’s internet user can download 1.4 gigabytes movie file in less than 5 minutes. Such nations can be called file sharers’ heaven. They have adopted a regulation call “young-parazzi”. Its name came from “paparazzi.” How the process work is that any people can contact cyber police and they will be granted with money. Of course the file sharers have to pay more amounts to the company with copyright or they will face criminal conviction. “young-parazzis” made more money with more reports and this resulted reduce in number of file sharers.
