The Succession to the Throne, August 1714
On August 1, 1714, the Princess Anne of Denmark died at Kensington Palace. For the previous twelve years she had usurped the royal style in spite of the fact that her brother, King James III and VIII, was alive and residing in the Duchy of Lorraine (now part of France).
In 1701 the Prince of Orange had given his assent to the Act of Settlement which excluded Catholics from the succession. It provided that at Anne's death without issue she should be succeeded by that prince who was next in line to the throne and held the Protestant religion. In August of 1714 this was the Elector George I of Hanover.
By the provisions of the Act of Settlement (1701) some forty-eight Catholics were in 1714 excluded from the succession on account of their religion. This religious bigotry is the foundation of the Hanoverian-Windsor dynasty.
