James Bateman is a graduate student within the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
He previously served on Governing Council and Academic Board during the 2012/13 term
while an undergraduate in Engineering Science at the University of
Toronto.
A pressing issue faced by student
governors is that they are only elected to serve 1-year terms
compared to 3-year terms of all other members. This puts us at a
disadvantage for contributing student perspectives on issues while
trying to learn the complexities of sitting on an experienced 50-member
council. Having served one year as a member of Governing Council
already, he is well versed in the politics of the Governing Council, its
boards and committees. For this reason he asks for your vote to serve a
second term on Governing Council, so that he may use his experience to
better bring the perspectives of graduate students to the issues faced
by council.
During his prior term James contributed to:
- Installation of Professor Meric S. Gertler as 16th U of T President
- Consultation on development and endorsement of the
Co-Curricular record
- Consultation on Opportunities for Student Engagement in
University Decision Processes
- Tuition Fee Schedule for Publicly and Self-Funded Programs,
2013-14
- Establishment of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health as a
Faculty
- Terms of Reference for the University of Toronto Mississauga and
University of Toronto Scarborough Campus Councils and their Standing
Committees
- Ramsay Wright Building Teaching Laboratories Upgrades
- Relocation of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture,
Landscape and Design to One Spadina Crescent
- Approval of the Environmental Science and Chemistry Building at
the University of Toronto Scarborough
- Faculty of Law Expansion
- Jackman Institute of Child Study Expansion
- Establishment of the Institute of Management and Innovation
(IMI) as an Extra-Departmental Unit B
- External Auditor Appointment
As a former governor, mature student and entrepreneur, with nearly a decade of industry experience, James is well prepared to represent graduate students at the University of Toronto on Governing Council.
Vote for James Bateman and trust in his experience to represent you on the highest governing board at UofT.
