Sympathy
By Imzadi

He always dreamed, every night. Dreams of his past, dreams of horrors that had come to be, dreams of horrors that hopefully would never come. But more often dreams of her, soft hazel eyes, long soft blonde hair, and a slender body that fit so perfectly into his arms. The woman he loved was always in his dreams. He had loved her, and he had lost her, but not for eternity. The day would come when he would sleep, and waken, and find himself in her arms again. He would earn that day. They would then be together for all eternity in a better place than this world.

This dream was different. A television tower, a whole in the sky leading to chaos, and a diving leap to save her sister and the world. A pretty girl with red hair and a sad face coming to him. She didn’t need to say a word. All he had to do was to look at her face. Buffy was dead and Angel was alone again.

He knew what he had to do. He jumped into his car and headed west as fast as he could, knowing that he had put himself at risk but knowing that he could do nothing else. He didn’t need to sleep, just to drive.

Hours later, he arrived at his destination. Entering the Hyperion, he saw Angel sitting at his desk, his head in his hands, as he had sat when his beloved Rosemary died. He had come back because he knew what it was like to lose the love of his life. The others didn’t. They could sympathize, but only he could truly empathize. Crossing the room, he put his hand on Angel’s shoulder.

Angel looked up into the face of the last person in the world he ever expected to see again. "Lindsey?"

"I know, Angel. I know what it is to lose your true love. I came because I had to, because I do know. Nothing can comfort you now, but I can listen and I can share."

Rising, Angel moved over to the sofa and sat, gesturing to Lindsey to sit next to him. Then, as Lindsey had cried on Rob’s shoulder when Rosemary died, Angel wept on his. Lindsey wrapped his arms around Angel and held him. They sat there for hours, not moving.

Finally Angel gently disengaged himself from the man who had at one time been his worst enemy. "I’m all right now."

Lindsey smiled a wry smile. "No, but you will be someday. And you will be together, just as I know that Rosemary and I will be together. She’s with me now, Angel. I feel her. And Buffy is with you and always will be. Now I have to get some sleep so I can drive back."

Angel took him to a room. Lindsey didn’t turn down the bed. He just removed his jacket and his shoes and lay down on top of it. Then he slept for twelve hours. When he woke, he put on his shoes and his jacket and left, driving straight back to the city where he was staying until he moved on.

That night, in his own bed, he was visited by not one but two beautiful blonde women. "Thank you, Lindsey,"Buffy whispered and then vanished.

Rosemary kissed his forehead. "I love you, Imzadi."Then she too vanished, but the kiss lingered. Lindsey slept, a smile on his face.
