Lindsey woke up with a strange feeling. He hadn't felt this way since before he joined Wolfram & Hart. He wasn't at all hung over. What the devil? He suddenly realized that he was not in his own bed, either. Curiouser and curiouser (he had read Alice in Wonderland). As he started to get up, he noticed with shock that his right hand was back. Yes! Another strange thing. He did not feel the need to use the bathroom, as he usually did first thing in the morning. But he was thirsty. He wanted a nice warm cup of blood! Oh, my God! Searching for the bathroom, he found it. When he looked into the mirror he saw, or, rather, to his horror, he didn't see. There was no reflection. He picked up a comb and saw it reflected in the mirror, but not the hand holding it. What in the world?
As Angel stared into the mirror with horror, seeing a reflection that shouldn't be there, he suddenly realized what must have happened. Oh, no!
As Lindsey stared into the mirror with horror, not seeing a reflection that should be there, he suddenly realized what must have happened. Oh, no!
Lindsey rushed to the bedroom and searched for the phone. Angel used the toilet for the first time since the day he was human with Buffy and then rushed to the bedroom and searched for the phone. As he tried to figure out how to place a call with only one hand, the phone rang. He picked it up."Hello?"
"Angel?" came the incredulous voice-his own incredulous voice.
"Lindsey?" he replied, in Lindsey's voice, of course.
"WHAT THE DEVIL HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?" both men shouted into the phone simultaneously.
"I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?" both of them responded simultaneously.
Lindsey, the rational lawyer, was the first to realize what had happened."We need to talk as soon as possible. You'd better get over here right away."
"As if I can drive with one hand!"Angel replied.
"Whose fault is that? You smashed the prosthesis. At least I could shift gears with it."
"You can drive. Come over here."
"And be burned to a crisp? No, thanks. Take a taxi. I can afford it."Lindsey had another thought."Are you dressed yet?"
"Of course, I'm dressed. And showered. And shaved. And then after I've done all that I called to see why I'm in your body. Are you stupid? I just got out of bed."
"Okay, then. Put on the blue Armani suit with the white shirt & red tie that are hanging with it."
"Do I get a fake beard and Uncle Sam hat too?"Angel sounded highly annoyed.
"If you're in my body, you have to wear my clothes. After all, yours would hang on my body and are not appropriate for work."
"I'm not going to Wolfram & Hart today!"
"Well, I can't go in your body, can I? This will give you an opportunity to do everything you've always wanted and snoop freely. Don't forget my briefcase!"
"Is there anything else I can do for you, Lindsey? Would you like me to make your bed or drop off your dry cleaning?" Angel said sarcastically.
"No, just get dressed and get over here asap. We have to talk."
Lindsey hung up the phone and looked in Angel's closet. Sheesh! Didn't the guy wear anything but black or gray? Oh, well, I won't have to look at myself.
The first thing Angel wondered was whether or not Lindsey wore underwear. He found a laundry hamper which contained at least one pair of silk boxers. I guess that answers that question. He found the underwear drawer and took out a pair of black silk boxers. Putting them on was not easy with only one hand. Also the uneven weight on the right side made him a little out of balance. Then he found a pair of black silk socks and tried to put them on. Again, it was really difficult with only one hand.
Opening the closet door, he found the blue suit that Lindsey had mentioned and, of course, the shirt and tie were hanging with it. Is the guy obsessive-compulsive or what! So Angel took the George W. Bush outfit out of the closet. He had a lot of trouble with the buttons. Then, of course, what did he do with the right sleeve? He ended up leaving it hanging. Now for the trousers. He sat on the bed and, with a certain amount of struggling, managed to get the trousers on. Tucking the shirt in neatly was impossible. Now for the belt! That, too, was a struggle, and he was sure he missed a loop! He slipped the tie around his neck, and the tie slipped right off! Again! Now, how do I tie it? Finally Angel held one end in his teeth and managed to get some semblance of a knot. He looked in the mirror again. God, he looked absolutely pathetic.
Going into the closet for shoes, he was very dismayed to discover five pairs of black Oxfords. No loafers! How in the world did Lindsey tie his shoes? Well, Lindsey could just tie them for him. After all he had two good hands. Angel wished he hadn't smashed Lindsey's prosthesis. But then, how could he have known!
He suddenly realized he was starved. For food! Real food! Not blood. What did McDonald have to eat anyway? Fortunately Lindsey had a coffeemaker with a timer, and fresh coffee was available. Pretty darned good coffee too. McDonald can make coffee; I'll give him that. Searching for something to eat, he found instant oatmeal and corn flakes. There was a carton of milk, too. Skim! He quickly made himself a bowl of oatmeal and sat down to eat it. His mother had made the best oatmeal back in Ireland when he was a boy. Mama! He hadn't thought of her in a century, at least. Of course the last memory he had of her was her body, drained of blood, on the floor of their house, just as he had left her. When he got his soul back, that was the sin he regretted the most. That, and killing his little sister.
No time for regrets now. He grabbed the briefcase and Lindsey's keys and managed to shut the door behind him. Downstairs in the street he signaled for a cab."The Hyperion, please."
Meanwhile Lindsey had dressed and made the bed. Now what should he do while he was waiting for Angel to arrive? He was so thirsty for blood, but the thought nauseated him. However, he guessed he'd better drink some. After all, he should take care of Angel's body so Angel would take care of his. He went into the lobby and started looking for the kitchen.
As he was heading for the kitchen, he heard the door open."It's about time you got here," he barked at Angel. But it wasn't Angel! It was Cordelia.
"So that's the thanks I get for showing up a little early!"she replied, sounding just a little annoyed.
"Sorry, Cordelia."I'm going to have to keep this a secret from Cordy and Wes, he realized. And Wes was sharp! He might realize what was going on. Maybe he could help...Well, for the time being, we'll leave that as a last resort.
Cordy went into the kitchen and began to make coffee. She poured a cup of blood, warmed it gently in the microwave, and offered it to Lindsey, who she thought was Angel, of course."Thanks, Cordelia," Lindsey said, a look of total disgust on his face.
"You are in some mood today. I think I'll stay away from you, Mr. Moody Guy!"
Cordelia sat down at her desk, munching a chocolate covered doughnut. Lindsey looked at the cup of blood. It just wouldn't look any better no matter how long he looked at it. He hoped he could hold it down. Well, bottoms up! Bleecch! Actually, it didn't taste so bad. But he really wanted coffee. He poured himself a cup and sipped. It had no taste! He sipped again. Again, no taste. He reached for a doughnut & took a bite. No taste for that, either! Sheesh! This is lousy!
Just then the door flew open and Lindsey McDonald or, rather, Angel in Lindsey's body, came rushing in."Cordy! What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I might ask you the same question, Evil Lawyer Guy."
"It's okay, Cordelia. We need to talk. Alone." Lindsey/Angel took Angel/Lindsey by the arm and led him into his bedroom. Cordelia rolled her eyes. It couldn't be! Not the two of them? No way! At least she hoped not. Darla was bad, but she was a woman, at least. Angel & Lindsey? She sat shaking her head as they disappeared into the bedroom and shut the door.
"Way to go, Lindsey. Now Cordelia thinks you & I are having a relationship!"
"I don't care what she thinks. We have a lot to discuss. My God, look at you. Your tie is a mess, your shirt is half untucked, your sleeve is just hanging, your hair is uncombed, and I'll bet you didn't brush my teeth either."
"Well, it's hard to do with one hand, as you know."
"And just how did I happen to have one hand? And no prosthesis? Think about it."
"Why are you in my good clothes? That's not what I wear to hang around the Hyperion."
"I at least told you what to wear. You didn't tell me diddly. And I made your bed."
"The sound of one hand applauding."
Lindsey/Angel knelt in front of Angel/Lindsey and began to tie his shoes, just as Wes stuck his head in the door. All he saw was Angel on his knees in front of Lindsey. He muttered, "Excuse me," and backed out."Cordelia, do you have any idea..."
"I hope it's not what it looks like."
"The mind boggles."Wesley fell down onto the sofa. No, no, no!
"Way to go, Lindsey. Now they think you and I are lovers."
"I'll kiss you on the way out. Now let's get this shirt straightened out."He opened Angel/Lindsey's belt and took it off, as Cordelia poked her head in again. She poked it right back out, a look of horror on her face!
Lindsey tucked the shirt in, relooped the belt, and retied the tie. Then he showed Angel how to comb his hair."At least now you look like you could go to Wolfram & Hart."
"Great! I know absolutely nothing about the law. How do I fake it?"
"I'll help you. Did you bring the briefcase?"Lindsey looked at the papers."Okay, first of all, I have a meeting with Lilah and Brett about the Thompson case. You shouldn't have to say much, but my thoughts on the subject are..."For the next twenty minutes Lindsey gave Angel a rundown on what he'd need to know to face the day at Wolfram & Hart. Angel felt a little, but only a little, more secure and confident.
"So, what do I do today?"Lindsey asked.
"We have no cases, so you can see what you can come up with on our little problem here. Who could have done this to us?"
"Darla? She wants you and can't have you. She can have me but doesn't want me. Maybe she found a way to put me in your body and have the best of both of us. It's worth researching."
"Good thinking, Lindsey. The same idea had crossed my mind, and it's definitely something I wouldn't put past her. There's one other possibility. The mayor of Sunnydale had left Faith an amulet that allowed her to switch bodies with Buffy. Maybe she might know something. Why don't you go visit her in prison?"
"Is it visiting day? And how would I get there?"
"Wes can drive you from the underground parking garage. If you stay in the back, the tinted windows will protect you. Or you can go in the early evening."
Lindsey nodded."I'll see what I can do. I can't imagine that Faith would do this, but she might know what happened to the amulet."He had another thought."Angel, be very careful of Lilah. She's been trying to get something on me, and this just could be it. She hates me and wants me out. Watch her. I'm not kidding. And try to stay away from the mind readers. The mystic barriers should not be a problem because you don't seem to be a vampire at present."
"Go see Faith and try to locate Darla. Keep this phone on so I can check in with you if necessary. And try to convince Wes, Cordy, & Gunn that you and I aren't lovers."
Lindsey chuckled."Oh, I don't know, Angel. I'd love to see them getting used to that. It's a real temptation."
"When we get our bodies back, I'll really show you how I feel if you don't straighten this out! Take care of my body, Lindsey. I want it back in one piece."
"That's how I wanted my body, Angel."Lindsey smiled his wry smile, and Angel had the grace to look just a little ashamed.
As they walked out of the bedroom, they noticed the three associates of Angel Investigations trying hard not to stare at them. Before Angel/Lindsey could leave, Lindsey/Angel put his arm around the smaller man's shoulders, pulled him close, and kissed his forehead."I'll get you for this, McDonald!" Angel whispered fiercely and left.
Chuckling to himself, Lindsey walked over to his desk and sat down."That Lindsey is really one hot guy! Wow! He's got all the right moves."Noticing the horrified looks on the faces of all three of the others, Lindsey added, "Well, I can't ever have Buffy without losing my soul, and you wanted Darla out of my life-or unlife, as it is. I need someone, don't I?"
"I wasn't aware that you liked men in that particular way, Angel," Wes said as calmly as he possibly could.
"In the past 240 years I've done a lot of things, Wes. Some worse than others. But you get a taste for variety."Angel will kill me for this, Lindsey thought, but I'm having fun. I'll straighten it out in a few minutes.
"But Lindsey? You hate him. Besides, I never thought he was gay."
"Oh, he wasn't until very recently. Until he & I got to know each other better. I tried to hate him so I could stop wanting him, but it didn't work."Just a little longer, Lindsey thought."I only pretended to hate him to throw you all off. But it's time to come out in the open."
Cordy said, "I just don't believe this. You and Lindsey."She shook her head.
"All right, it's not true. There's nothing between us but some business that has just recently come up that we had to take care of. We are not in love, we are not having a relationship, and neither of us is gay. We just had to talk in private. I smashed his prosthesis the other night, so I was tying his shoes when you walked in, Wes. Cordy, you saw how he looked when he came in. I gave him a hand with his shirt and his belt and his tie. There is absolutely nothing romantic or sexual between us!"
"Thank goodness," Gunn said, and the others nodded.
"I need to go and see Faith today. Wes, is it a visiting day?"
"It's Wednesday, so you can see her. I'll need to take you, but it's supposed to be overcast all day. We can go this afternoon. Anything else?"
"I really need to find Darla, and I have an idea where she might be. Let's go."
Wes pulled the car out of the parking garage and followed the directions to Lindsey's former condo. Pulling into the parking garage there, he let Lindsey/Angel out."Wait here, Wes. I can get in unless it's been rented to someone else. If Darla is there, I won't have a problem."
Wes sat back in the driver's seat and pulled a book out of the glove compartment."The Face in the Abyss. I've been looking forward to reading this."He was soon engrossed in the strange world of A. Merritt.
Should I knock? Lindsey wondered. I could kick the door in now that I'm in Angel's body. Maybe I should knock, just in case there are new people in there. He knocked gently but firmly. He heard footsteps on the other side of the door, and then it was thrown open.
"Angelus!" Darla said. Her mouth was covered with blood, and the body of the rental agent lay on the floor.
"Darla. What the devil are you doing? Don't you have any common sense?"
"Silly boy, I was hungry. I can't believe you came back to me."Throwing herself into his arms, she kissed him passionately. Then she pushed him away, a look of shock and horror on her face."Lindsey!"
"Darla, why did you do this? Why did you switch our bodies? Did you want his body so much that you put me in it?"
"Oh, God, no. I didn't want just his body, Lindsey. I wanted all of him. Body and soul, although I would have preferred him without a soul. But I didn't want you even in his body. So didn't you think I'd know that you had switched bodies with him?"
"But I didn't do it. I don't know who did it, but I thought it was you so you could have him. I know he rejected you, just the way you rejected me. Of course he didn't rob you, the way you robbed me. It wasn't enough to run away. To leave without a goodbye, let alone a ‘thank you,' after I risked so much for you. Oh, no. You forced me to move out of my condo to protect you, and then you can't even let me have a decent place left. You're a true bitch, Darla."
"And you are a doormat, Lindsey. You think you're quite the big bad lawyer. But you're a marshmallow, and Lilah will eat your liver one day."
"At least you won't see it. I hope I never see you again, Darla. Keep the things you stole. It's the price of a valuable lesson. Goodbye."
"Good riddance," Darla said, slamming the door behind him. Lindsey made it to the stairwell before he started to shed tears of sorrow and anger. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed his work number.
Angel answered on the first ring."Lindsey McDonald."
"It's not Darla."
"You've seen her? Where is she?"
"In my old condo. She didn't do it. She doesn't want any part of me, just you and only you. She knew me right away and accused me of doing it to get her."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm not. At least I won't be in a few minutes. Is everything going okay?"
"I'm keeping my head above water, I think. Lilah hates you."
"I knew that. It's mutual. Did you get through the meeting okay?"
"I faked it pretty well. But it was damned boring."
"Keep a stiff upper lip. Just 7 more hours to go!"Lindsey disconnected the call. Then he walked down the stairs to the parking garage and got into the car. Wes was so deep into his book that he didn't hear him get in."Wes, what are you reading?"
Wes was startled."Oh, sorry, Angel. Just A. Merritt. Fantasy."
"The Face in the Abyss? Good one."
"I wasn't aware that you liked fantasy, Angel."
"My life is a fantasy, Wes. Let's go see Faith."
Meanwhile Lilah was sitting on the corner of Lindsey's desk, her skirt hitched up to show the maximum leg that she could decently display. Not that she really cared about decency. She hadn't around Holland, and she didn't around Brett. Angel was paying no attention to her. Just like Lindsey, he was sure.
"So what do we do about the Osborne hearing? He can't possibly go to trial. He's a vampire."
"I know that, Lilah. Why don't you put some of that brain that you think is so superior to mine to work on it? I'll leave it all in your bloody hands, Lady Macbeth."
"The poor boy cites Shakespeare. You try too hard, Lindsey. I can still hear Oklahoma cowboy in your voice. We need to go meet with Nathan Rayne now, and I think we should present a united front. After all, it's us against the senior partners."
"You know, Lilah, somehow I just can't seem to care."But he followed her down the hall into Nathan Rayne's big office.
He hated Lilah, but he had despised Nathan Rayne ever since he saw him throw himself on his knees in front of the materializing Senior Partner that Angel had destroyed. Just remember he's a wuzz, Angel thought. As it turned out, coming to this meeting was the best thing that had happened to him all day. A new plot involving the kidnapping of Wes and Cordy (they didn't really know about Gunn yet) in order to force him into making a bargain with them was being hatched. Maybe switching bodies with Lindsey did have its good points! He filed everything away mentally.
Lunch was fantastic. In the Partners' Dining Room the special was a steak au pouvoire to die for. And for dessert a chocolate cake with a fudgy center. Yum. He could stand eating with Lilah and Brett with food like that. He noticed the looks passing between Lilah and Brett. She's in love with him! But he's using her. Well, I think she deserves it. Brett was every bit as hyper as he had been the first evening he came into Wolfram & Hart to see Lindsey and had run into Brett obsessing over the Gruber meeting.
After lunch came another boring meeting. He found himself nodding off."Lindsey!"
He shook himself awake."Lindsey, my God, pay attention, will you. We need your opinion here," Lilah was saying.
Okay, Angel, the best defense is a good offense."You've never cared the least bit about my opinion, Lilah. Why should you? You're five years older than I am and five years more experienced."He noticed Lilah wincing at that and casting a surreptitious look at Brett."Isn't it amazing, though, that I've caught up with you? Maybe you do need my opinion after all. But I think I'll let you muddle through this by yourself, or with the help of Lover Boy here."
Lilah was fuming."Lindsey..."
"Don't Lind-sey me, Lilah. As I said, you and Brett spin your little web, but you're the ones who'll be caught in it."Angel stood up and walked out of the meeting. Back in Lindsey's office, he suddenly realized what he had done. Lindsey would be in for it now. But that wasn't what was important. He might have learned something useful. But he was tired of trying to fake being something he wasn't. Well, maybe he'd take Lindsey's suggestion and see if he could find anything useful among Lindsey's papers.
He did find some useful bits of information that would be helpful to him in his struggle to redeem himself. But there wasn't as much as he expected. Maybe Lindsey wasn't as much in the loop as he thought.
As he went into the men's room that afternoon, he ran into Brett. Although he didn't care much for the guy, he thought a word might be in order."Brett, if I were you, I'd be very careful about betraying Lilah. She's vicious and wouldn't think twice about getting rid of you. I wonder if she'd set up a nice liver lunch for you."
"I can handle myself, Lindsey. Don't worry."
"Oh, I'm not worried. I just know what she's capable of. I don't think you do. Watch your step and don't ever let her catch you cheating on her. You'll be dead meat."Angel washed his hands and left the bathroom. How in the world can I make it through another-he looked at his watch-three hours?
Meanwhile Wes and Lindsey had arrived at the prison. After presenting identification and being searched, Lindsey was led into the visiting room. A few minutes later Faith was led in and sat down on the other side of the glass."Hi, Angel," she said with a big smile."I'm really glad to see you."
"How are you doing, Faith?"
"I'm getting used to it. I'm keeping my nose clean, but it's not easy. You have helped me so much, and I don't deserve it. I tried to kill you. And yet you care about me."
Lindsey didn't really know what to say."Faith, everyone deserves a second chance. You are trying to make things work this time."What the hell am I doing, he wondered. I had a second chance and I blew it."I'm proud of you, Faith."
She beamed."So what brings you here today? Is something wrong? You look a little strange. What is it?"
"I can't lie to you," he said, and wondered why he felt that way."I'm not Angel. I'm Lindsey inside Angel's body, and Angel is inside mine. Please don't get upset with me. I'm trying to help both of us get back to where we should be. That's why I'm here."
"You know about the Draconian Katra that the mayor left for me. I used it to change bodies with Buffy. No, I don't have it any more. It's gone, and I don't know where. I can't help you."She started to rise.
"Wait, Faith. I made a terrible mistake sending you after Angel, and an even bigger one sending that demon after you. I wish I could do something to help you. I mean it."
"Why should I believe you?"
"Because I could have pretended to be Angel, but I was honest with you. I really am sorry about what happened between us. I'm sorry for everything you've gone through. And you're not the same girl that was in my office that night. You've matured."
"Well, there were two ways I could go here in prison. I could become hardened or I could try to atone. I chose to try to do better. You should too. You might get another chance. But I'm not the one who did this to you. However, I'll tell you this. I did learn some things when I was in Buffy's body. Maybe you'll learn from being in Angel's."
"Maybe."He smiled a wry smile."Angel told me you like Hershey bars. I brought you a box. The matron will give them to you. I hope everything goes all right with you, Faith."
"Lindsey, thank you for telling me the truth. Maybe there's hope for both of us."
On the way back to the Hyperion, Lindsey sat silently. Wes tried to talk to him, but he was deep in thought. When they got back, he sat on the couch, brooding silently.
When Angel finally arrived, after a long day at Wolfram & Hart, Cordy decided that she'd have a little fun. She winked at Wes & Gunn."Angel! Your boyfriend's here!"
Gunn picked up on it right away."So you two are together now. What a surprise. I imagine you'll be moving in soon. After all, why shouldn't you two come out in the open?"
"We'll be happy to help you move in, Lindsey," Wes added."It'll be so good for both of you."
"I know that both of you needed somebody. For what it's worth, you have our blessings. It took a little time to get used to it, but if it makes you happy..." Cordy could barely keep a straight face.
Angel's blood was starting to boil."We're not lovers!"He looked at Lindsey."Didn't you tell them that?"
Lindsey decided to risk one more minute."As Gunn said, why hide it, darling?"Then he burst out laughing."You should see the look on your face!"
Angel was starting toward Lindsey even though he knew that Lindsey, in Angel's body, could beat him to a bloody pulp. But then as everyone else had started laughing as well, he knew that Lindsey had cleared everything up.
"All right, now. What's going on? And don't tell me there's nothing going on because both of you are acting extremely strangely. Almost as if..." Wes said pensively.
"As if what, Wes?" Gunn asked.
Cordelia looked puzzed."As if each of them were really the other."
"You've changed bodies!" Wesley said."How?"
"Why? That's an even better question," Cordy said.
Lindsey answered, "We don't know how, we don't know why, and we don't know who did it."
"I know that neither of us did. I wouldn't choose to go through life with one hand."
"Neither would I, but I wasn't given the choice," Lindsey said bitterly.
"So that's why you went to see Faith. She had taken over Buffy's body, and you were wondering if she had done it to you?" Cordelia asked.
"No, but we wondered if she knew where the Draconian Katra that she used had gone. But she didn't."
"Darla didn't do it either," Lindsey said even more bitterly than before. She really hurt him badly, Angel realized.
"I could do some research on it, but I have a suggestion that we might try first," Wes said."Let's go to Caritas."
"If it isn't the Fearsome Foursome plus one," the host greeted them."Lindsey, what are you doing with this tone-deaf group who couldn't carry a tune on a stretcher?"
"Angel & I have to sing together. It's important."
"Okay, so what will it be?"
"How about Take Me Out to the Ball Game?" Lindsey/Angel suggested."Or Tom Lehrer's Irish Ballad?"
"Isn't that the one about the girl who kills her whole family?" Wes asked."Nice thoughtful choice."
The host looked at Lindsey/Angel."But Angel suggested it."
"Not exactly," Cordelia said, giving Lindsey/Angel a dirty look.
"I'm sorry. I let my sense of humor carry me away."
"Humor, maybe, but no sense," said Angel/Lindsey.
"I've got it," Wes said."Hotel California! It seems rather apropos to me."
"Good idea, Wes. I think you're right," said Angel/Lindsey. Lindsey/Angel nodded.
"You sing the lead," Lindsey said as they headed for the stage."After all, you're in my body so you should have my voice."
"Ladies & gentlemen & assorted other beings, Caritas proudly presents our own answer to Glenn Frey & Don Henley singing the Eagles' Hotel California."
"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair," Angel started out. Lindsey was right. He could sing! They managed to do a serviceable version of the Eagles' big hit and were rewarded by enthusiastic applause.
"Oh, guys, you were great. So, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, you're wondering why you're suddenly joined at the soul. Not unlike Turnabout Intruder," the host said as he sat down at their table.
"Actually that was one of the weakest of the Star Trek episodes," Lindsey/Angel said.
"Maybe a little more like Freaky Friday," Cordelia offered."I loved that book when I was a kid. Annabel's mother traded bodies with her. What a riot!"
"Except that neither of us did it."Lindsey/Angel said.
"I can see one thing," the host replied."Whoever did this to you didn't do it out of any evil or malicious purposes. It was done out of love."
Gunn was incredulous."Why would you say that?"
"I think this had a purpose. Have either of you gained something from today?"
"I did," said Angel/Lindsey. Lindsey/Angel nodded in agreement.
"Still," Lindsey/Angel said, "I want my body and my life back. I'll bet that he does too."
"Absolutely. I hate being short."Then Angel smiled to show that he was kidding.
Just then the host jumped up and caught Cordelia before she started to fall. She was having a vision."Demon! Huge! Claws like razors. Heading for a hospital. To the maternity ward. It's after the babies!"Wes held her gently while she recovered.
"Which hospital? Let's get going."Angel started to rise, but Gunn stopped him.
"You're in Lawyer Boy's body and you have one hand. We're going to have to take him! I hope he can use your moves!"
"I'm coming with you. I can maybe do something," Angel said.
"Let's go!"Lindsey had a totally apprehensive look on his face, but he knew he couldn't let babies be killed."Cordelia, what hospital?"
"St. Mark's. Hurry!"The five dashed out of Caritas leaving behind the unpaid bill.
"They'll be back," the host said.
Angel tried to get into the driver's seat but Gunn stopped him."I don't know what Lindsey's body's driving skills are. I'll drive."
"I'm an excellent driver," Lindsey said, but he hopped into the back. Angel/Lindsey sat in the front passenger seat and Gunn peeled rubber.
During the wild ride to the hospital, Lindsey became more and more apprehensive. Even though he had all of Angel Investigations with him, he was the one in Angel's body, the one who had to perform. He couldn't allow babies to die. The memory of his baby sister Guinevere in his arms, slipping away as he frantically tried to warm her was still as vivid as it had always been. No! He would save those babies or die trying. By the time they arrived, he had psyched himself up completely."Let's go, gang," he shouted, jumping out of the car.
"Right behind you, Rambo," Gunn said, but he wasn't right behind him. Lindsey had already entered the hospital and was running up the stairs. The others took a few seconds to unload the weapons from the trunk and followed behind.
Lindsey was in the nursery standing between a huge drooling monster and the rows of bassinettes."Get these babies out of here now!"He spotted a limp nurse on the floor."And her too!"Okay, body, you're on autopilot now. Do your thing!
Wes & Cordy wheeled the bassinettes out as quickly as possibly while Gunn picked up the unconscious but, fortunately, still living nurse , flung her over his shoulder, and carried her out. Angel, a sword in his hand, stood next to Lindsey. The creature lunged and Lindsey jumped at it, feet first. That didn't do much good. The creature just drooled and brushed him aside like a fly."Damn!"
Angel struck with the sword but, as Lindsey was not naturally left-handed, he didn't do any damage. Lindsey grabbed the sword from Angel and swung it at the demon. He drew some yucky orange blood, but the demon swung at him with its razor sharp claws and drew even more blood from his (or rather from Angel's) chest. It hurt like hell but now Lindsey was really angry. Next to him, Angel drew the creature's attention and Lindsey darted behind him. By that time Wes, Cordy, and Gunn were back. Lindsey jumped on the creature's back and tried to drive the sword into his throat. Nope! Skin was too tough."Don't you moisturize, you ugly creature?" he yelled.
Cordelia laughed. Then she threw a jar at the creature, hitting it just above the eye. Lindsey jumped off its back while Wes pushed Cordy behind him. Lindsey swung the sword and caught the demon in the eye. As it howled with pain, it clawed at Lindsey again. When its mouth was wide open, Lindsey threw the sword into its mouth. It lodged in the back of the creature's throat. He jumped again, hitting the demon in the throat and knocking it down. Then he grabbed the sword and plunged it deep into the throat. A horrible reek and a gush of orange blood followed. The demon moaned, twitched, and died.
"Are all the babies all right?" Angel asked. A nurse who had been watching the whole incident, aghast at what she had seen, nodded. Then she fainted into Wes' arms."Let's get out of here now," Angel said, hurrying everybody down the back stairs. Lindsey could hardly make it down, but Gunn and Angel half-carried him to the car."We need to take care of his wounds now."
"And we're leaving a hospital because...?" Cordelia asked.
"Because he's a vampire, of course. Let's go. Do we have a good blood supply at the Hyperion?"
Wes & Cordy looked at each other and shook their heads."I thought it was your turn to shop," Cordelia said.
"You know it wasn't," Wes argued.
"I don't care whose turn it was. He needs blood."
By that time they had arrived at the Hyperion. Wesley found one pint in the refrigerator."That's not enough."
"I'm sorry, Angel. Now what do we do?"
"There's only one thing to do."First he held the bottle to Lindsey's lips and made him drink it down while Cordelia was bandaging his wounds. Then he held out his wrist to Lindsey."You need more. Drink, Lindsey."
"I can't. I won't."
"You have to. I'll tell you when to stop. Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to your body. I promise."
"I don't want anything to happen to you either."
"It won't. Now drink."Lindsey changed into vamp mode and sipped gently at Angel's wrist."Don't sip, you twit. Drink!"
Lindsey did as he was told. Angel stopped him when he felt himself getting a little weak."I'm not sure that's enough."
Wes stepped forward and held out his wrist."Here, Lindsey. You did a fantastic job tonight. Take some of mine."
When he had finished with Wesley, he took a little from Gunn. Somehow he couldn't take any from Cordelia. I almost cost her her sanity. But that seemed to be enough.
"Angel, you should go to his place just in case you're switched back. The bodies should be in the right places," Wes said."I don't know why, but I'm sure of it. I'll drive you over there."
"Take care of him, you two," Angel said to Gunn and Cordelia. They helped Lindsey to Angel's bed, where he quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Arriving at Lindsey's, Angel undressed, brushed Lindsey's teeth carefully, and got into bed. I hope I wake up at the Hyperion, he thought.
The next morning Angel woke up in a tremendous amount of pain. His stomach was bandaged and he was ravenously thirsty for blood. He could drink a gallon! Yes, he was himself again. Thank goodness. I hope Wes or Cordy went to the butcher shop, he thought.
Lindsey woke up and rolled over to discover that his right hand was missing. He looked around and saw the familiar surroundings of his own bedroom. I'm back. It feels so good to be back. I guess Angel is back too. Just then the phone rang.
"Are you all right, Lindsey?"
"I'm fine, Angel. And you? You were very badly hurt last night."
"It's extremely painful, but I heal fast. You were very good last night. I couldn't have done better."
"Thanks. I had to save those kids. It was nice having two hands, but I really don't want your body back again. No offense."
"None taken. I'm glad to be back in mine again, pain and all. But for what it's worth, now that I know what you go through every day, I have a lot more sympathy and respect for you."
"You too, Angel. I'm glad we got a chance to understand each other better. Maybe next time we see each other we could be a little more-cordial?"
"As long as we aren't on opposite sides, Lindsey."Angel hung up. Lindsey went to the shower and prepared for another day of Wolfram & Hart and, of course, Lilah.
"Ladies, you are looking quite lovely this morning."He sat down at their table at the Sons and Daughters of the Emerald Isle Club.
"Flattery will get you nowhere, Allan. We're married women."
"Actually, Mary Margaret, my dear, Fiona is, but you are not. Death did you part, remember?"He kissed her hand.
"Do ye think it worked, Allan Francis? Do ye think our boys will stop hating one another now?" Liam's mother asked.
"Aye, my lovely lassie, I do."
"Then thank you for everything, Allan."Mary Margaret McDonald, Lindsey's mother, gave Allan Francis Doyle a big kiss on the cheek.
"Aye, thank ye, Allan."Fiona kissed him on the other cheek."Ye're a true friend to my son."
"To both of our sons, even though Lindsey doesn't know it."
"Someday he will, Mary Margaret, my dear. We'll get him on the right path yet. Now let's have our tea."A teapot and a platter of soda bread appeared on the table and the three friends enjoyed a celestial breakfast.
