Tissue Repair

·        Regeneration is the process of reconstituting a tissue to its pre-injury state.

·        Healing is more of a patch-up response, replacing tissue with scar.

·        Fibrosis is chronic connective tissue deposition in response to chronic injury.  Sometimes the term is used to refer to ANY abnormal deposition of connective tissue.

·        Granulation tissue starts to be formed 24h after injury, and consists of proliferating fibroblasts and angiogenesis.  RBCs may be extravasated at the site of new vessels, and the tissue may be edematous.

·        A Scar is the ultimate result of granulation tissue, and is composed of spindle-shaped fibroblasts, dense collagen, fragments of elastic tissue, and other ECM components.  The older a scar is, the less vascular (and paler) it becomes.
