Gross features:

    •

Histologic features:

    • glands of adenocarcinoma with the absence of invasion
    • atypical columnar epithelial cells:
      • frequent mitoses (essential)
      • apoptotic bodies subadjacent to the nucleus (same significance as mitoses?)
      • elongated, cigar-shaped, hyperchromatic nuclei
      • coarse granular chromatin
      • greatly reduced amount of cytoplasm with only minimal intracellular mucin
      • crowding and pseudostratification with 2 or more rows
      • loss of polarity
    • architecture of glands:
      • lobular architecture is common
      • numerous outpouchings
      • complex papillary infoldings
      • may display cribriform pattern focally
    • absence of desmoplastic stromal reaction
    • may have intestinal or endometrioid type
