·         Post-operative state

·         Prolonged bed rest / immobilization

·         Genetic hypercoagulability syndromes

·         Factor V mutation (Factor V Leiden)*

·         Prothrombin mutation*

·         Methyltetrahydrofolate mutation

·         hyperhomocysteinemia

·         Antithrombin III deficiency

·         Protein C deficiency

·         Protein S deficiency

·         Fibrinolysis defects

·         Infections of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis, acute appendicitis, etc) (portal vein thrombosis)

·         Acquired hyperhomocysteinemia
