Gross features:
- calcific deposits in the fibrous ring
(annulus) of the mitral valve on inflow surface
of leaflets
- irregular, stony
hard
- occasionally
ulcerated
- calcium deposits
rarely may penetrate into myocardium
- thrombus formation
