Histologic features:

·         striking enlargement of infected cells

·         cellular and nuclear pleomorphism

·         Cowdry A bodies – basophilic nuclear inclusions spanning half the nuclear diameter, set off from rest of nucleus by a clear halo

·         Cowdry B bodies – large homogenous basophilic (eosinophilic?) cytoplasmic inclusions

·         Involved cells

·         Endothelial cells

·         Fibroblasts

·         Smooth muscle cells

·         Parenchymal epithelial cells of glandular organs

·         Neurons in brain

·         Alveolar macrophages, epithelial, and endothelial cells in lungs

·         Tubular epithelial and glomerular endothelial cells in kidneys

·         Lymph node:

·         florid follicular hyperplasia

·         monocytoid B cell hyperplasia expanding sinuses
