Adenovirus

Epidemiology and Etiology:

· Adenoviridae family

· DS DNA

· Organ transplant recipients may have disseminated infection and severe hepatitis

Common sites:

· Virtually every organ system

· Respiratory tract

· Conjunctiva

· GI tract

Gross features:

Histologic features:

· Intranuclear inclusions

· Early

· Eosinophilic inclusions resembling herpes virus inclusions

· May have an artifactual clear halo between inclusion and the nuclear membrane

· Later

· Basophilic

· Increaslingly fills the nucleus

· Eventually obscure the outline of the nuclear membrane (smudge cell)

· May resemble CMV
