Gross features:

Cytologic features:

    • cytologic changes involving cells that are smaller and less “mature” than the cells of LSIL
    • nuclear features:
      • high N:C ratio (important)
      • contour of nuclear membrane is quite irregular
        • frequently demonstrates prominent indentations or grooves
        • focal thickening of nuclear membrane
      • chromatin coarsely granular or clumped, (but may be fine) and evenly distributed
      • hyperchromasia
      • variations in nuclear size and shape
        • more variable than in LSIL – may be small nuclei but high N:C ratio
      • nucleoli generally absent
    • cytoplasmic features:
      • variable but usually immature or densely metaplastic
