• granular pink precipitate in alveoli
• alveolar microhemorrhages may be present
• hemosiderin-laden macrophages (“heart failure cells”) may be present
• chronic:
• abundant hemosiderin-laden macrophages
• fibrosis and thickening of alveolar walls
