Gross features:

    • stages of development:
      • erythematous paule
      • pustule
      • ulcer (deep, painful) with undermined violaceous borders

 

Histologic features:

    • similar to acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, but more extensive
    • dense dermal neutrophilic infiltrate
    • dermal necrosis
    • ulceration in later stage
    • leukocytoclastic vasculitis may be present
    • some lesions begin as neutrophilic folliculitis
