Fixed Drug Eruption

 

Epidemiology:

    •  

 

Common sites:

    • genitalia
    • face

 

Gross features:

    • repeated administration of certain drugs results in recurrence in the same location
    • reddish brown patch
    • bullae maybe

 

Histologic features:

    • scattered individual and grouped dyskeratotic (necrotic) keratinocytes
      • brightly eosinophilic cytoplasm
      • pyknotic nuclei
      • found at all levels of epidermis
    • focal vacuolar interface change
    • melanophages in the papillary and upper reticular dermis
    • perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates in reticular dermis
    • interstitial eosinophils
    • bulllae, if present, are subepidermal
      • occurs in areas of severe vacuolar interface change
