Follicular hamartoma

 

Epidemiology and Etiology:

    • Middle aged and elderly
    • AD inherited forms occur 

 

Common sites:

    • scalp
    • face
    • may be generalized (associated with myasthenia gravis, BCC, SLE, alopecia)

 

Gross features:

    •  

 

Histologic features:

    • thin anastomosing cords
    • lobules extending from hair follicle
    • cells with squamoid and basaloid features
    • peripheral palisading may be present
    • foci of keratinization may be present
    • horn cyst formation may be present
    • abortive hair follicles may be present
    • scant and mildly fibrotic stroma
      • may be loose or densely fibrotic
      • occasionally mucinous
      • stromal-stromal separation occasionally
    • few mitoses
    • low apoptotic rate
    • no stromal retraction
