Halo Nevus

 

Epidemiology:

    • adolescence

 

Common sites:

    •  

 

Gross features:

    • pre-existing nevus develops a surrounding rim of hypopigmentation
    • gradual disappearance of nevus over several months
    • repigmentation of halo usually follows

 

Histologic features:

    • nevus of any type with  dense lymphocytic infiltrate
      • lymphocytes densely arranged, obscuring underlying melanocytic lesion
    • focal atypical nevus cells

    •  

 

Other features:

    • may occur in patients with concurrent melanoma
    • may occur in setting of vitiligo
