bilaterally enlarged
- firm
- intact capsule
- may be slightly
adherent to surrounding structures
- involved areas are firm,
yellow-white on cut section
Histologic features:
- patchy changes
- early:
- scattered
follicles replaced by neutrophils (microabscesses)
- later:
- aggregations of lymphocytes,
histiocytes, and plasma cells around collapsed and damaged thyroid follicles
- multinucleated
giant cells enclosing pools or fragments of colloid
- more later:
- chronic
inflammatory infiltrate and fibrosis in foci of injury
