Ciliated (Tubal) Metaplasia
Epidemiology:
- Associated with estrogenic stimulation
Common sites:
Gross features:
Histologic features:
- ciliated cells within glands (not at the
surface)
- interspersed among non-ciliated cells or extesnive
- abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm often
- peg cells (perinuclear clearing)
- mild atypia may be present
- NOTE: ciliated cells may be found in
non-neoplastic, hyperplastic, and malignant endometria
- Presence or absence of hyperplasia or
adenocarcinoma is evaluated by the usual parameters
- NOTE: ciliated cells are normal on the
endometrial surface, especially in proliferative phase
