Kawasaki Disease

 

Epidemiology and Etiology:

·         Uncertain etiology

·         Young children usually

 

Common sites:

·         Cervical lymph nodes

 

Gross features:

·         Conjunctival congestion

·         Oral mucous membrane lesions

·         Polymorphous exanthema

·         Cervical lymphadenopathy

 

Histologic features:

·         Lymph node:

·         Necrotizing lesions

·         Fibrin

·         Karyorrhectic debris

·         Neutrophils

·         Fibrin thrombi in small vessels usually prominent

·         Also seen in Rickettsial infection and thrombocytopenic purpura

·         Arteritis with fibrinous necrosis maybe

Molecular features:

·          

 

Other features:

·         Acute febrile illness

·         5 of 6 clinical criteria must be present:

·         Fever

·         Congestion of the conjunctiva

·         Oral mucous membrane lesions

·         Distal extremity lesions

·         Polymorphous exanthema

·         Acute cervical adenopathy

·         May be life threatening when coronary arteritis is present

·         Rare cases of malignant lymphoma following Kawasaki disease
