Epidemiology and Etiology:
Common sites:
- small vessels of
- aorta (vasa
vasorum)
- nervous system
Gross features:
- “tree-barking” – wrinkling
in the intima caused by fibrosis in the media
- atheromatosis of
the aortic root (unusual for typical atherosclerosis)
- may envelop and
occlude coronary ostia
Histologic features:
- aorta:
- initial
involvement of the aortic adventitia
- particularly
around vasa vasorum
- obliterative
endarteritis rimmed by lymphocytes and plasma cells
- ischemic damage to
the media
- patchy
loss of elastic fibres and muscle cells
- inflammation
- scarring
