Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Common sites:

    •

Gross features:

    • fungating, ulcerating, and infiltrative patterns

Histologic features:

    • foci of stromal invasion:
      • irregular contour, in contrast with surrounding epithelium bound by smooth contour of basement membrane
      • scalloping of the dermal-epidermal interface at site of invasion
      • better differentiated appearance with abundant cytoplasm and prominent nucleoli
      • lymphoplasmocytic infiltrate and/or desmoplastic response in surrounding stroma
      • occasional small focus of keratinization
    • keratinization:
      • squamous pearls
      • individual cells with markedly eosinophilic dense cytoplasm
    • intercellular bridges
    • differentiation:
      • well-differentiated – above features are seen readily
      • mod-differentiated – above features seen easily but not extensively
      • poorly-differentiated – above features are focally seen
