"Dead PSU, lesson learned"
28/05/2007 13:39

++ This sunday morning, as I was turning on my PC, I saw a big flash and a pop coming from the back of the case. The power light turned one but there was no response from any hardware. I quickly turned off the main switch, and tried again. Surely my PSU blew up, I thought. I than opened up the computer and removed my PSU which smelled pretty burnt. Unfortunately no good computer shops are open and Future Shop and Best Buy only carry garbage in terms of PSU (Not to mention the fact that they are extremely overpriced). Well today I'm going to buy a new one and I'm looking at a few particular brands, Enermax seems to be a very reliable option, Fortron would be what I would chose but for some reason I have not been able to find them at any small shops in TO. Zalman is also a good backup option, but really I won't be able to wait too long with no PC, therefore I'll get whichever one of these I can find. As I have been learning more about PCs on the last little while, I have learned alot of the importance of a good power supply, and how an unstable PSU can give you a lot of headache. Apparently I only learned that the hard way, and I'm just hoping my HDDs are ok. I actually wouldnt mind if my MOBO took a hit with that incident, I've been thinking about getting some new parts and that would be the perfect excuse to invest in a new MOBO for a core duo CPU. Well besides that, I saw the new pirates of the caribean this weekend, which was pretty good. Carlin cam to TO and we went to see that movie, as well as watched a lot of The Office and BSG on the net. Now I'm at work and figured I'd post something here. I also wanted to post 2 URLs for forums that I found while trying to learn more about PSUs. Here they are, they may be very useful to other people too that visit my website :

++ After spending a week at my parent's house I came back to Toronto to work. I got a job with Dr. Perumalla and Dr. Banks to help improve the surgery labs from PSL374. For next year we are planning on switching the method of anesthesia from Injectables to Inhalants, so my first task is to do some research on what we should switch to and how to do it when talking about multiple surgeries at the same time. I know I will also be looking at the effects of this switch on the cardiovascular system as well as the respiratory system, to know how that will affect the results of the different experiments. Other projects will also come up but this one is what my main focus is right now. So lately I've been spending most of my time at the library looking for papers and books that are relevant.
Besides that I haven't done much, Carlin is still at home so I haven't really been seeing her much. Fortunately I get to see her this weekend, and maybe go eat sushi with her :P~~~~

++ I've been playing some wow as well, for those who are familiar, we've been working on Karazhan, got up to the Maiden of Virtue already and got her down to 40% on our first and only try. I've also been lvling my Shadow Priest alt which now has Shadowform (FTW!) and I'm lvling a twink hunter, which turns out is a lot of fun with those pet things. I was also able to recently get my sister and my mom hooked on wow too, they are still getting to know the game but I am thinking they are enjoying it. It's been so long since I started that I had forgotten how confusing the game can be at first. The gameplay is easy but understanding all the aspects of the game is a never ending process. Especially now after BC with even more things to consider. It's hard to even teach them all the concepts because I start talking about a bunch of stuff that is important to know at lvl 60, that really when I was lvl 15 I neither needed to know nor did I care. Explaining what Aggro management is to my sister is being one of the hardest tasks. Well anyway, I'll stop here and I will probably post more often now that I'm off school. I probably have more hew things to talk about anyway.

++ Hey everyone, I've been pretty busy lately with exams and all those things. For that reason I have been extremely lazy with the website here, but perhaps during the summer I will try to make a few changes and additions as well as do updates more often. Well this will be a brief message, I just found this really cool documentary on cuttlefish and I figured I should share with all of you. I know my sister will especially enjoy it. Click HERE to watch it. I also wanted to wish Carlin good luck on her exam on monday.

"Ponto de quebra"

++ I haven't really updated this forever, but I haven't done much anyway so that's probably a good thing. Well I might have actually found myself a nice job for the summer. It is almost for sure now that I will be working with Dr. Perumalla from the department of physiology. Dr. Perumall is the head of the faculty of medicine and physiology teaching labs, and my job will most likely involve doing surgery on rats, in order to improve a current lab exercise for third year physiology students. From what I know, I may be working more specifically with kidney function and perhaps trying to figure out what types of anesthesia result in the best success rate in these surgeries, but this second one I might just be making it up. I may also be working with lab view to make a computer simulation of a model of the respiratory system, I would imagine it is some model related to chemoreceptors but I'm also not sure about that yet. I will know more about the job soon, but this is just what I have gathered so far. Another good new is that one of the projects that I participated during last summer with Dr. Duffin and Tu was also accepted in the Journal of Applied Physiology I believe, and it will probably be published some time this year. Another project that I helped with during the summer, which I may even get my name in the credits is also looking good and might end up being published, hopefully in the same journal, which would be so so nice. I really hope it works out. It will be about changes in chemoreceptor sensitivity due to intermittent hypoxic bouts during sleep.

"Harry Potter July 21st"

++ Busy couple of weeks I tell ya. Since Xmas break I haven't really had much time to breath, first I had a BCH test which turned out to be worse than I thought, then I had a PSL lab report, then the week after that I've just had quite a bit of work to do, such problem sets, pre labs, application deadlines, essay proposals and tomorrow I have a presentation on the cardiovascular system for my lab. I've also been having to look for a lab spot for the summer, this year I'm being a bit more picky and I might end up with no lab, which is all right I guess. I might as well do something different this summer get some perspective and hopefully some fat paychecks. I also went home last weekend I think, my mom's birthday was not too long ago so I went to spend some time with the family. It was pretty good, great food, some fun board games and stupid movies.

++ Today is Carlin's birthday, it's too bad that we have all sorts of classes up to 8PM tonight but we'll still hang out after and enjoy some good food and drinks. On Friday we will really celebrate, go out for dinner and eat steak and other goodies until we can't eat anymore, it will be awesome. Well, I really hope you enjoy yourself car and good luck on this new year that begins today. I love you.

++ Hey everyone, I know I have left this website without an update for a really long time. Well exams took a lot of my time back in december and during the break WoW took all of my time. Anyway, I guess a few things happened in this period. Carlin went to Paris for a week which she really enjoyed. She visited a bunch of neat places there and most importantly she ate a lot of quality food, including some delicious chocolates that she brought back so I could have a taste too. She also brought some champagne which was very very good and fancy. Well even before my exams ended I also went to a function with Carlin and my PI. It was a Christmas Party of the Respirology Group for the St. Michaels Hospital. It was really fun, and we both enjoyed a lot. To make it even better we won a draw for an $80 dinner at The Keg which was our treat for that week too. Some great steak, calamari and creme brulee there. Carlin and I also enjoyed some really good all you can eat sushi in Barrie. Very nice little spot with a lot of good food. That was our Xmas treat, I ate a lot and then we went to see Eragon. Which I thought was quite entertaining despite cheesy dialogs. Well now I'm back in school and reality is kicking in. As a last note I pre-oredered my copy of Burning Crusade yesterday, damn thats going to be some quality time in Outlands.
