| As General Manager of Soundstreams Canada I was in a
leadership role during a period of incredible growth for the organization.
Soundstreams tackled some of the most ambitious projects in its
existence including the 2003 Musicools Festival, the first festival of
Opera for Young People to be offered in North America.
Accompanying the festival was a five-day conference offered to
international opera/music theatre presenters and artists to discuss the
development of new works for young audiences.

As
General Manager of Soundstreams, I introduced email marketing to the
company through the utilization of html e-mailers like the one pictured
below.

| Also during 2002-2003, we filled St. Michael's
Cathedral to the rafters for a memorable concert of music inspired by the
Byzantine tradition featuring the works of British composer, Sir John
Tavener and Canadian composer, Christos Hatzis. Soprano, Patricia
Rozario made her Canadian debut. |

As General Manager of Soundstreams, I did a
little bit of everything. During Somersfest, a double bill of opera
and dance by composer, Harry Somers, I created a film and lecture series
that capitalized on the shared theme of the two works. Both works
were based on mythology with fantastic creatures of legend.
Man's encounter with the alien then became the focal point of this
series that was composed of:
 | A science-fiction author's panel |
 | Jungian view of "the alien within" |
 | Historical encounters with the stranger in warfare and genocide |
 | Classic films of encounters with the alien with modern improvised
jazz soundtrack |
Reaching out to non-traditional audience groups formed new marketing
opportunities and raised the profile of the organization and the
production. View fullsize poster in pdf. click here. |
| Soundstreams has always had a very
active educational program. During my tenure I both expanded this
educational program and coordinated aspects of this program to enable
synergy between the previously disparate activities. For example, I
introduced a regular component to the educational program entitled,
"The Young Artists' Overture". This program for advanced
high school and university music students and ensembles involved students
in learning, rehearsing and performing new music under the mentorship of
our composers-in-residence.
By making "The Young Artists Overture" a regular part of the
Soundstreams educational program, we also could utilize these advanced
students to demonstrate the composers' work in our
"composer-in-the-classroom" visits. This maximized the
composers time and enhanced visits. Formerly we had a choice to limit
classroom visits to a few available and affordable visits involving
professional musicians or to have the composer visit the classroom without
any live demonstration (use of CD's only).
During one of my last educational programs with Soundstreams Canada I
worked with Canadian composer, R. Murray Schafer to develop and implement
an educational program that was highly successful involving primary
students, high school students, community choirs, and future music
educators at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).
