World Literacy of Canada offers a national writing contest, Write
to Read, for students in Grade 4 and 5. During 2005 while
I coordinated the contest, we received over 2500 entries--a 60% increase
over 2004 despite having a truncated time-line.
The contest theme, Stories from my Family, was well-received by
teachers and students. Children were to research the topic by
speaking to parents and extended family and choose a story to write about
in a short illustrated storybook.
In the final phase of the project, for the first time, the collected
award winners were published in CD-ROM format with interactive components.
This collection is viewable online click here.

| Award-winners were flown to Toronto with a parent, to record
their own readings of their stories and feted to a weekend in the city
capped by an award presentation ceremony. Ontario House Speaker,
Hon. Alvin Curling presented the awards.
Right, Northern Regional Winner from the Yukon, receives her award. |
