World Literacy of Canada offers a national writing contest, Write to Read,  for students in Grade 4 and 5.  During 2005 while I coordinated the contest, we received over 2500 entries--a 60% increase over 2004 despite having a truncated time-line.

The contest theme, Stories from my Family, was well-received by teachers and students.  Children were to research the topic by speaking to parents and extended family and choose a story to write about in a short illustrated storybook.

In the final phase of the project, for the first time, the collected award winners were published in CD-ROM format with interactive components.

This collection is viewable online click here.

Award-winners were flown to Toronto with a parent, to record their own readings of their stories and feted to a weekend in the city capped by an award presentation ceremony.  Ontario House Speaker, Hon. Alvin Curling presented the awards.

Right, Northern Regional Winner from the Yukon, receives her award.

In the Toronto community, World Literacy of Canada coordinates the annual St. James Town Storytelling festival.  Click here to view the St. James Town project profile that I developed for fundraising purposes with the project.
