E. McClung Fleming. Artifact Study. A Proposed Model. 1974

Fleming's model is quite comprehensive because it includes both,  a thorough analysis of the object's  formal properties and an analysis of the object's place in its own culture.  The model also includes an understanding of the object in terms of the observer's own culture. The categories proposed in the model, though clearly specified,  allow to include other methodologies or theoretical approaches.  For instance,  when examining the object's role as "vehicles of communication" of various cultural values and beliefs,  we can use theoretical tools from semiotics.  Because of the wide scope of the model, probably some areas might need further delineation, depending on the object chosen.  However, I think it is a good model for my object because of its simplicity and clear explanation.

Fleming proposes to perform four operations of analysis  on five basic object's properties.

EVALUATION ("in terms of our cultural standards")
CULTURAL ANALYSIS (relationship between objects and its own culture)
INTERPRETATION (values of present culture)
IDENTIFICATION
Factual description.
Provide information about the five main properties.

EVALUATION

Evaluation of aesthetic qualities and workmanship.
Appropriateness of material and texture, skill and workmanship.
Effectiveness of the overall design and expressiveness of form.
Factual comparison of the object with others of its kind in quantifiable terms,  such as as size, cost  and rarity (similar, unique, early example or avant garde).

CULTURAL ANALYSIS

Functional analysis to reveal the essential meaning of the object.
Functions performed and place of the object in its own culture.
Reasons for initial manufacture and intended uses.
Unintended roles--vehicle of communication of values and beliefs, signs and symbols.
