RECURRING FF CHARACTERS
Posted on August 2, 2004
There have been several characters, monsters, and others that Square has put in several of its Final Fantasy games. Even though each FF game is unique, Square still seems to put some regulars in all of their Final Fantasies.

Monsters such as Behemoth, Cactaurs, and Bombs make appearances very often but there are only three characters who end up being the memorable ones. They are Chocobos, moogles and Cid. In this feature you will get to learn a little bit about how these characters played significant roles in the Final Fantasies up to date.

Chocobos are the most recurring characters in the Final Fantasy series, they can also be considered as being the official mascot of Square. At first these seemingly overgrown yellow chickens were used as an unusual way of transporting goods but they have very much evolved ever since. Now they hold their own series of games similar to Mario Kart, just that your riding a chocobo instead. But all in all Chocobos have always been able to help the main characters in Final Fantasy accomplish their goals and therefore are an important part to the game.

Chocobos made their first appearance in Final Fantasy II (Japan). We did not get our hands on this game yet, but who knows now that Square and Nintendo have joined up again, we might finally get too. In most of the final fantasy games, Chocobos noramlly hang around a Chocobo forest where they wait to pick up the FF heroes and take them on their destination without having to fight fiends. These Chocobos have appeared in almost all the FF titles and have also taken role in Tobal 2. The games that have Chocobos as the main characters are Chocobo Dungeon 1 and 2, and Chocobo Racing. If your a Chocobo fan like myself, just play the games. They aren't the best, but worth playing once, so rent it.

Chocobos have also been known to play important roles in the mini games of the FF series. They are normally found in areas full of greenery or something of that sort. For example, FF9, Chocobo Forest. In FFX, the calm lands etc.. All in all, Chocobos are overgrown yellow chickens that help transport characters without them having to get into a random battle.

These cuddly creatures have been known to make appearances since the early Final Fantasy games. They were created by the great Yoshitako Amano who has been with Square for a very long time. He has made artwork for the company for ages and has considered moogles as being one of his favourite characters. They are very different from Chocobos in the way they look and in their intelligence. Moogles are smart creatures that normally try to maintain a complex society. No one really knows exactly what a moogle is, but they do seem to be some sort of a mammal. They tend to have wings and a red nose.

The creatures made their debut in Final Fantasy 3 (Japanese version). Just like how we missed out on the debut of the Chocobos, we missed out on the debut of Moogles. In their debut role, they acted as a group of industrious characters operating and maintaining a magic shop. Moogles have made brief appearances in Final Fantasy 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10. However, their main role can be considered as being the one in Final Fantasy 6. During one special encounter you ,the player, get the opportunity to control a team of moogles in a multi-player battle. At the end, one of the moogles named Mog joins you for the remainder of your quest.

Moogles have also appeared in Final Fantasy Adventure for the GameBoy and Secret of Mana for the super NES. This was an odd occurance since the FF universe rarely crosses over into other titles. (Note that Final Fantasy Adventure isn't really an FF game but a predecessor to SOM). All in all, Moogles are loveable and huggable creatures that have become memorable to many in the Final Fantasy community.

This character has the wierdest reoccurance of them all. Almost every Final Fantasy game has a Cid character in it, whether it be as a Non playable character or a party member. And in each game, Cid is completely different. There isn't any resemblance whatsoever in cids of one Final Fantasy, and cids of other Final Fantasy especially in appearance.

All FF fans seem to have their favourite Cid. And there normally is a tie between the sailormouthed Cid Highwind from Final Fantasy 7 and the tragic inventor from Final Fantasy 6.

The Cid character has also appeared in the recent FF movie named FF the spirits within. However, in the movie, the spelling of his name has changed from Cid to Sid. All in all, Cid is one name that will always ring a bell in our heads whenever we play a Final Fantasy game.
