I have experience in the following areas: depression and anxiety; emotional, physical and sexual abuse; trauma (PTSD), eating and body image issues; stress and burnout; bereavement/grief; sexuality; health issues; life transitions; relationship issues; general self-esteem concerns. I've worked as a university counsellor (McGill University), as a counsellor at the Edmonton Sexual Assault Centre, and in private practice.
My approach is eclectic, depending on the needs of the person, and may include cognitive therapy, psychodynamic or insight oriented therapy, emotion-focussed and emotion regulation therapy; mindfulness meditation and mindfulness strategies.

Psychologists and psychological associates practicing in Ontario are "registered to practice at the same level of competence" (quoted from the College of Psychologists' website). All have studied psychology in an academic setting, most to the PhD level; others have opted for a Masters degree and a lengthy apprenticeship instead. Some counsel couples, families and children. They belong to a college that maintains standards of training, practice, confidentiality, and treatment of clients or patients. Clinical psychologists do psychotherapy. Like all reputable therapists, they follow strict rules about protecting confidentiality. If you need a psychotherapist who is not a psychologist or would like to work with a registered nurse because you are dealing with health problems, see East Toronto psychotherapists. It appears that our faculty plan is now covering counselling by clinical members of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists.
This site is Mike's personal web space, and is not an official publication of the University.
Back to Mike's home page,
Psychologists: We are now accepting new listings if they are easy to cut and paste. We do not put websites on these listings--only on articles.
How to get listed If you are a licensed clinical psychologist available to work with University employees or their family members, please send your listing to Michael Mares (m.Mares at the utoronto.ca address) giving address or district, contact information, and issues worked with etc. (This is a low tech operation, so please use the subject heading "Psychologist Toronto" and send the listing in the body of the email, not as an attachment.) Please be aware that if you put your email on a website you can expect to get a lot of spam.
Please do not put spaces or fancy formatting such as bullets in your listing, because it would get garbled if transferred to this page. If you send the listing with line breaks the way it should appear, send an additional copy along the line without line breaks, so we can use that if the first version doesn't copy correctly.
We sometimes offer psychologists free web space to post original articles of interest to potential clients/ the general public, but right now we don't have time. When we do this will be updated. Following is the information for when we are accepting them again.
Listings of psychologists who contribute articles will be placed at the top of the directory on this page to make your material easier for searchers to find. Articles might also be found independently in searches. Accessibility, originality and quality are important. Please email the article, stating that it is not published elsewhere on the web. You retain the copyright. We accept your material on the understanding that if you ever give permission to have it posted elsewhere you will give us at least two weeks notice so we can remove it, for your own protection as well as ours. Your listing here will be linked to your article, and you can put a link to your own website if you have one. Please note that we do not link to commercial websites such as Psychology Today, just to your own website or one that you share with a few colleagues. We retain the right to refuse material for publication, but we are not expecting to have to exercise it. You can send your page(s) in the body or an email or in a textfile: Word, Word Perfect or similar, or HTML code. If you are using HTML feel free to insert the metatags you want, but we reserve the right to modify them. A photograph or illustration would be welcome. There is a limit of one graphic (file size limit 50K) per page. The graphic must be in a separate file. We cannot use PDF files. There is no charge for these services.
